First time trying this, but need a little perspective.
Currently working full-time as a Confidential Clerk/Social Media & Web Manager for my hometown government. I graduated Champlain College in May 2017 (Cum Laude, 3.61 GPA) with a B.S in Professional Writing. I completed my degree in three years instead of four, having entered the school with 30+ credits already under my belt.
This is where things get interesting.
I’ve always wanted to study Game Design, but back when I was a timid, 17-year old with no video game design experience and low self-esteem in my math skills, I was too scared to pursue it. I always loved writing, however, and Champlain’s Game Writing specialization seemed like a match made in heaven…until it was cut the summer before I got there. Nevertheless, my love of writing got me through Champlain, but I still wanted to pursue Game Design.
Last fall, I attended SUNY Oswego’s Strategic Communications program, but ended up getting my current full-time job and leaving. The program wasn’t a good match for me, though I finished the first semester with a 3.3. Now, I’m looking at NYU’s Gallatin school to do individualized study, most likely in Game Journalism. Right now, I’m taking classes at a local community college in Game and Computer Programming, and Graphic and Web Design to get the experience I may need to get in to NYU Gallatin or, by chance, the Game Design MFA itself. Though those classes aren’t completed yet, my grades are all in the A range currently.
For the sake of getting a better perspective, I’ll list some of the other things I’ve accomplished:
I was one of 20 students in the state of New York selected to be an NYPA Journalist intern, a paid internship that lasted eight weeks. I completed this internship with a newspaper in my hometown, and after the internship period ended, I was asked to stay on as a contributor. I still write for the paper to this day, writing sports stories, town board reports, and columns for the Town Supervisor.
I was the public address announcer for Oswego’s athletics program, and have been doing announcing gigs since I was 12 years old (yes, squeaky, pre-pubescent voice and all).
Published two poems in literary magazines, one which was college exclusive, and another at the regional level, and have submitted other poems to national magazines and contests.
Acted in two productions at Champlain College and played the leading role in a student senior film.
Voted Captain of the Champlain College Quidditch Team (unfortunately, we didn’t have the budget to get flying broomsticks)
I’ve gotten my feet wet in many different areas, which is why NYU Gallatin spoke to me. Do I have any chance of getting in?
