Is it possible that $6,547 is $5500 student loans plus work study?
If so, then that hypothetical family’s disposable income might increase in that scenario with a child away at school.
Does the NYU award include the portion of the Pell Grant the student is entitled to receive?
That’s good news, since NYU is my daughter’s dream school.
NYU’s website still says that it does not guarantee that it will meet full demonstrated need. This is the official explanation from NYU’s website about how “merit” scholarships are awarded based on both merit AND need:
“While NYU does not guarantee we will meet the full demonstrated need of every admitted student, our recent move to a more need-based awarding model for scholarships has helped to make NYU a reality for more and more students.
………
Within the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, our scholarship selection committee reviews student applications for many of our most prestigious scholarships, using the Common Application and supporting materials including transcripts and letters of recommendation. The Office of Financial Aid then reviews the selected scholars to determine their financial need. Selected students are awarded scholarships based on this need and merit evaluation process.“

From November 2021.
The current first-year class is the first to receive financial aid that fully meets students’ financial need, with average financial aid packages increasing by over $11,000 since last year.

That appears to be an outdated page. NYU is not always great at updating the counselor page, which is the one you quoted there.
This is the page for students applying for aid:
“ For students who file on time, NYU meets the full demonstrated need of admitted students as determined by your expected family contribution from information that you provide on the CSS Profile. ”
