Hey guys,
NYU has been my dream school for so long, and I just recently got off the waitlist. I applied to CAS but got into the LS program. I’m already committed to Temple University and really excited about it, but NYU has been my dream for so long. I don’t really like the LS program and I’m not excited about not being able to take classes for my intended major till junior year. Also to add, I got a great scholarship from NYU that it would basically make it cost the same as attending Temple University.
Where do you think is most worth it?
What is your intended major, and when would you be able to begin taking classes related to your major?
Are you essentially guaranteed admission to that major after two years?
^^^Same question about the major.
@happymomof1 NYU’s liberal studies program is designed as a Core foundational program that takes place during the first two years of study. From their website:
“Can I begin a major or a minor while at Liberal Studies?
Elective credits may be used to begin to complete requirements in your prospective school, to begin introductory classes in a major, or to begin a minor. In addition to minors available within schools, you also may pursue any of NYU’s cross-school minors that are available to undergraduates.”
So OP will be able to take classes in their major, just they’ll be counted as electives until they officially declare that major at the end of sophomore year.
OP, basically you’re worrying over nothing. At Temple, you’ll still have to complete a core curriculum that will take up a large portion of your first two years. You’ll only be able to take a few classes in your actual major during that time. Which is the exact same thing as at NYU. The only difference is that the classes at NYU will be electives until you officially declare your major.
My advice is to choose NYU and just take as many classes as your can within the LS core that are in the same discipline as your major.
LS is more suited to some majors than others so I think a lot depends on that. Also admission is guaranteed to some schools (including CAS) but competitive or limited for others after LS. I don’t think this question can be answered without a better idea of what the desired major is.
More generally - for the same cost I’d take NYU over Temple any day, but not if you’re going to hate your first two years.
first, thank you for all the responses. My intended major is Africana Studies which is a major housed in the CAS.
Aside from the LS program, I’m still very conflicted as to if I want the traditional college experience and community that Temple will offer, that I have come to love since paying a deposit or a more non-traditional experience NYU will give me.
I have also talked to many LS kids, who informed me about the stigma that comes with being in the LS core program; how many students view it as the less smart school, and see students in LS as less than.
(If not sure if this is totally accurate, or just one person’s experience btw)
How well does the LS core match your interests?
What’s your net cost there, and net cost at Temple (ie., what you have to pay if you don’t take any loans)?
In the end, I chose NYU. Thank you for your help!
