money aside, my mom wants NYU and my dad dad says berkeley. but i think my dad only wants me to go to berkeley because its higher ranked than NYU on that stupid US news thing.....so, im a political science major and law school is a very plausible possibility....any advice? by the way, i have this gut feeling i'd be miserable at berkeley. thanks!

i posted the same topic earlier!!! i'm making the same decision as you, and i'm also majoring in political science. ah. i kinda want to go to nyu, because it'd be a nice change to live in ny after being in california my whole life. plus, it's a private school with better internship possibilities and study abroad. at the same time, though, berkeley is very well known for politics, is very politically active, and is more school spirited (they actually have D1 sports).

have you visited the two schools? that might help. i went to berkeley yesterday, and even though it was pouring, i liked it. i went to nyu and am going back on april 9th for university day. are you going to that?

keep in touch... i'll be curious to see where you decide. i'd go with your gut... if you think you'd be miserable at berkeley, don't go.

for myself, i was leaning toward nyu, now i'm thinking berkeley... unless i get into stanford off the waiting list :-\ (doubtful)

haha wow thats so cool!...i did visit berkely before, and im going to visit nyu for that CAS reception thing. i was and still am leaning toward nyu because, like you said, it would be a major change of scenery, since i've been in california my whole life too.

i dunno...berkeley the city is nice and everything, but obviously it doesn't compare to new york.

also i live in socal and im an asian female. it won't that much of a change if i go to berkeley.

basically im leaning toward nyu...don't give up! waitlist isn't the end...it means you still have a chance at stanford! at least its not a rejection...

well anything would be a change of scenery for me, really. i live in a small town on the west coast, and almost everyone is white and christian. berkeley and new york would be a marvelous change. i'm really excited go to to ny in a few days!! yay!!!!! best of luck making your decision.

... and YAY for political science!!

NYU's Law School (i'm not sure how much you're thinking about going to a grad/law school but..) is REALLLY GOOOD!

i'm thinking of grad school after undergrad... but i was thinking of yale or georgetown

my vote is for cal

NYU- better for political science

haha i wish i had the choice of NYU or berk
for me, it's NYU or UCLA

i'd say berk only b/c of its ranking and price tag- NYU is SOOO expensive
and berkeley has school spirit, you know, games and stuff- so if you're the rah-rah type, you're at least given the option
NYU is not involved in sports at all

other than these reasons, NYU (but i'm biased, i'm from the bay area and i just wanna live on the east coast for a change)

I have the same decision too. I live in san francisco, so I know the area pretty well. Maybe this will help?

PROS for Berkeley:
1) Berkeley the city is small, but it's nice, and beautiful. You're only 20 or so minutes away (on a BART, the subway there, and the station is pretty much on campus) from San francisco, which is amazing city, probably the best on this side of the nation. Think if you mixed Boston and New York, but added some more laid back and artsyness, and smaller and certainly, more managable.
2) Housing is nice. Just built the new dorm units. Can't really complain about it.
3) Beautiful campus.

CONS:
HUGE SCHOOL. Seriously. I know most of us are "yay huge school", but really think on this. When I say HUGE school I mean TONS of graduates. Berkeley is largely a graduate research school, meaning there's lots of red tape and hardly many people care for you. You have to fight a lot.

Me, personally, it's hard to choose Berkeley because I know it so well and it's close to home

dude this is hard....im still so torn. the prospect of getting out of california is pretty enticing. and as for school spirit, i was never of the body paint donning,pom-pom waving, manical type...haha. but berkeley is ranked higher and its cheaper. but then again, it is nyu...

"haha i wish i had the choice of NYU or berk
for me, it's NYU or UCLA"

i got waitlisted at NYU and rejected from ucla

i guess ill go to cal

"haha i wish i had the choice of NYU or berk
for me, it's NYU or UCLA"

i got rejected from ucla.

ugh this decision is so hard.
i'm the rah-rah type so i want the school spirit...
but what can beat nyc?
even though berk is known for poli sci and is cheaper...
i also want to go to a private school... just better opportunities, really.

humph!

I'd pick Berkeley.
