I just submitted my application for the NYU Precollege and I just had a few questions:
When do you find out if you were accepted or not?
Are the Gallatin classes worth taking? I know there is a few writing classes under it and there’s no requirement you have to fulfill before hand to get in.
If you board, what hall do you stay at? Do you get to pick your roommate?
Hi! I went to NYU precollege in 2015 and it was the best six weeks of my life. When I applied I submitted my application on 2/9 and heard back on 2/22 so you should hear back within the next couple of weeks. When I went I took Sustainable New York (Gallatin) and Creative Writing (Intro to Fiction & Poetry) as well as the required essay writing class. All three classes were amazing (although essay writing a little less so). For the Gallatin class in particular, it was a really different experience. My class was in an art studio and I was the only precollege student in a class of 4 students. It was honestly such an interesting class and I learned so much. Plus my professor was really passionate about the class. I definitely recommend taking a class through Gallatin if you end up going (for sure look up the professor on ratemyprofessor beforehand though and google them to find out more about who they are).
When I boarded we stayed in Weinstein, however I believe last year they were in a different hall. You don’t get to pick your roommate but you do fill out a survey with your various preferences (cleanliness, sleep schedule, etc.). I ended up rooming with someone that lives a town over from me and had many of the same interests (we were pretty much the same person) and she is still one of my best friends. However, I have friends from precollege who had roommates that were so bad they ended up having to switch rooms, and some that just kind of lived together as opposed to having a close friendship. Many people even ended up having roommates from different countries as NYU likes to promote internationalism. It’s really a coin toss as to who you’ll end up with.
If you have any other questions about precollege please feel free to ask or message me as I could literally talk about the experience for hours!
