If you’re interested in finance you’ll probably want to apply to Stern because that’s what Stern is known for (econ not as much, though I’d say it’s still good) and because you can only take it as a major through Stern. You’ll be able to double major finance/math (or econ/math) once in Stern.

Note that both Stern and CAS have economics, so you COULD apply to CAS and do econ/math, or you could apply to Stern and do econ/math OR finance/math. If you’re going to do theoretical econ (which requires higher level math anyway) I’m not sure if there is a CAS/stern difference. So I guess this post was kind of useless but hope it helps anyway.

I would prefer to do whichever (econ. or finance) the school is best in. So, because it is more well-known in finance. I would apply to Stern as a finance/math dual major.

I would recommend that you apply to CAS for a major in economics and math. The CAS econ department is ranked #6 in the US and has incredible professors. I am an Econ major in CAS now and very happy I did not apply to Stern in the long run. If you wanna work your ass off and have no fun in college, go to stern. If you wanna have a good education and a good time, go to CAS. Plus, you can always get an MBA.
