man, nyu cant do this! since i was worried about this happenning to me, i sent everything with intl tracking service. when it comes to matters like this, nyu seems unreliable at times. anyways, in whatever you do, best of luck..

You should have hand-delivered the check and form personally, watch the adcom open it, and make him/her sign a notarized statement that he/she got it. Then they can't make that excuse. But anyway good luck. I would have done that if I lived in New York. But I live in CA so $350 round trip is too expensive for a guarentee that it'll get there. :)

i live in california but i still hand delivered it to the admissions office. apparently, this isnt veery common becuase the students working in the office were confused on what to do with it...the mail usually gets sent directly too the adcoms. but in the end, they got my stuff so its all good.

I hate incompetence.

Me too. I abhor incompetence. If I get into NYU and if they lose it, I'll blame it on FedEx because I'm sending all forms via fax, email (pdf) AND FedEx. :)

If they'll let you resend that enrollment form, then send it three ways:
Make two copies of the check AND all forms.
Fax it to NYU.
Scan it and email a pdf file to NYU. And lastly,
Mail it FedEx to NYU. Or better yet, deliver it PERSONALLY. You live in New York. You're familiar with NYU. That shouldn't be a problem. And 99.9999% of emails are delivered almost immediately, and 99.99% of faxes are delivered on time, so those are the most foolproof.

I've found faxes to be very unreliable. Connections are lost, documents come through illegible, and the pages that do survive can be never picked up, lost, or thrown into the trash. Your best bet is to send it with Delivery Confirmation well before the deadline so there's time for a re-send if the office staff flubs.

Everyone hates incompetence - I have a hot temper when I think people are screwing up - but frankly, when your office is receiving eleventy billions sheets of paper, it's a miracle more students don't get shafted. All in all, it's a learning experience - document everything you can and rigorously follow up.

Its to late to do that. You can always regret what you did not do but killing yourself over it won't help the matter.

I called the Undergraduate Office today and they told me that they do not allow freshman students to be admitted into the school in the fall and they cannot give personal appointments (kind of makes me laugh). That most likely means that i will take a gap year or try to call up the other schools that i got into and see if the credits I get from there will transfer.

Moreover, they now expect me to REapply to the school with my HS grades if i want to attend NYU next year. However, I just found a copy of the candidate reply form (signed and dated!) and a copy of the check. I will see how far that gets me. They needed proof to see if i actually signed up for the school and if this does not qualify as proof then i do not know what will!

I will continue to update you on this matter...

Take that and march into NYU Admissions with a lawyer. And demand to talk to the president of NYU or their inhouse counsel or the director of admission or some person of great power (and don't leave until they let you). And work it out. Feasible option, I guess. :)

If I get accepted I think I'm going to send my forms in 4 ways: fax it, email a pdf image, mail it FedEx overnight priority, and fly to New York and hand them to the adcom personally. I'll also make him sign a notarized statement that he received those forms in case he/she loses it so I can use that against him/her. I'll apply ED and when you have to reply in 3 weeks, you can't have anything go wrong. :)

Sounds paranoid I know, but I'd rather do things right the first time than have to do it twice, three times, or even four times.

theinfocenter, have you talked to your high school's college counselor or principal about this? First, if you are in NYC, they may have a personal contact there. Second, even if they don't have any connections, presumably they could verify that you decided to attend NYU well before the deadline and had, as far as they knew, sent in your material. (This would at least prevent NYU from thinking that you had perhaps enrolled somewhere else and then changed your mind.)

Whatever happens with NYU, you'll want your guidance counselor to help you out - if NYU falls through, the GC may be able to call in a favor at another school even though it's late. If you got into NYU, presumably there are many schools that would find you an attractive candidate. Good luck!

Two other thoughts:
1) Did you send in any other deposits or forms, e.g., student housing, that would add credibility to the fact that you did send in your acceptance?
2) If they flat-out can't, or won't, do anything, and you REALLY want to attend, see if they will let you defer for a year as a compromise. Find something interesting and productive to do for a year, and then start in the fall with all the other freshmen. That would be preferable, IMO, to a mid-year start (which sounds impossible anyway). Letting you defer might be a compromise between squeezing you in this fall and forcing you to reapply.

If you live in New york, walk to their damn office and bring your game face. Calling is weak, this is your future, its worth more than just calling.

I can't imagine them not contacting you with something--perhaps a survey even--had you decided not to submit the papers and/or they had received nothing from you.

So, this definitely does seem fishy. You need to go to their offices and refuse to leave until someone takes action. Especially if you were a student admitted in a free and fair manner like everyone else... If you were good enough then, why not now? Ask them this question and don't put on your happy face.

You need to talk to someone higher up, not just whoever picks up the phone (trust me, these guys know nothing and they will say anything that will allow them to end the call so they can go back to idling in front of the desk).

Search the NYU directory and get contact information of real adcoms from your school and contact them personally.

y17k has the right idea. Contact Deans, Adcoms, and Presidents of the university or whatever.. if you were accepted, you should be allowed to attend.

You should have a parent involved in helping you with this. Your parent and your guidance counsellor should be able to resolve this by speaking to an actual admissions officer (not the students who answer the phone or who are stationed at the front desk). Hopefully you've learned your lesson about the importance of following up on things and making sure checks are cashed, etc. and not waiting til six weeks later!

I am planning to write a letter and attach all the proof (i.e copies of candidate reply form, check, Financial Aid with only NYU listed, several scholarships, and a letter from my high school Guidance Counselor and possibility a letter from the principal of the school) and personally take that to the admission office to try and defer my acceptance for one year.
