Last year I applied and was accepted to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and NYU. However for NYU, I didn't submit my portfolio because I wasn't sure if I wanted to pursue art, and didn't want to be rejected because of it. I decided to attend NYU, even though they placed me in the Liberal Studies Program instead of CAS, LSP is very restrictive in that you can only take 4 courses per semester, three of them being required cores. Basically even if I declared myself for a studio art major in Steinhardt I wouldn't be able to pursue it until my junior year. However SAIC allows for deferred enrollment for a year. All I have to do is tell them whether or not I want to come and which semester I would be coming (Spring or Fall 2012) and also resubmit 10 pieces for my portfolio to be put up for a scholarship. My main question is, how do the studio art programs compare? Am I better off waiting to see if I might be admitted to major in studio art (not guaranteed because I would have to submit a new portfolio), or should I leave NYU to go to SAIC? I'm really struggling with this decision because I love NYC and NYU itself, I just don't love that I have to put everything on hold until my junior year. I also don't want to waste another semester here if my class credits won't transfer over, but that's another issue entirely. Thanks for any input.
