NYU Stern Junior, AMA

Thank you for your thoughtful replies!

(I know this may seem a bit superficial) How are the girls/parties at NYU from a Stern perspective?
I’ve enjoyed the social life in NYC. I’m not really sure what information you specifically were looking to get.

He was asking if the chicks are hot.
Answer: No they’re ugly as ****.

Is it possible to double major in stern and another school? For example if you’re accepted into stern and major in finance and then want to major in something in CAS also.

Yes. There are some restrictions on majors Stern already offers and I believe on some Courant offerings, but it is certainly possible for the most part.

Hey, Alwayslivewell

Do you know if any of your classmates, esp Internationals go back to Asia (China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan) to intern/work, because I’m from that area, and I want to possibly go back upon graduation, so I was wondering if OCR includes overseas recruiting or would I have to apply for that myself?

Thanks!

Yes, they do. I believe there are around 10+ people this year interning in HK/SG. I’m not sure how many went for FT, but there are a fair few Stern alumn in the region.

OCR doesn’t cover Asia recruiting–you’d have to apply yourself. Several banks do give info sessions in New York that can be used for networking.

As another junior Sternie, everything that Alwayslivewell is saying is correct!

This might seem like a superfluous thing to ask but I have always thought of Sternies as a group of very intellectual people, and my question is, are there actually students who are failing? Like getting Cs or Ds or something like that. Or are you all just passing along fine?

There’s going to be a very small population in any school/class who for whatever reason don’t end up with grades they desire. More often than not it’s due to extraneous circumstances (family emergencies, etc) but I don’t know anyone with a C average.

Hey, I’m not very familiar with the US grading system, but what GPA does a C average usually equate to? And I heard people talk about the magical GPA cut-off at 3.5 for recruiting - if enough work is put in, is 3.5 a realistic gpa to obtain?

Thanks for all the help!

3.5 is definitely attainable. If you take a look at Stern’s latin honors cutoffs, you’ll find that cum laude has been around 3.6 in recent years. If you think about how many Sternies are interested in finance, then really your goal should be set higher as 30% of 600 is 180, and you should aim to be in a strong position while recruiting.

The grades you get in class:
A = 4.0
A- = 3.7
B+ = 3.3
B = 3.0
B- = 2.7
C+ = 2.3
C = 2.0
C- = 1.7
D+ = 1.3
D = 1

Hey, Alwayslivewell

Thanks for the help! I have one last question (for now) - when you were picking colleges, were there any institutions of similar (or higher) calibre that you turned down for Stern, and why?

Again, this is really helpful =P

I turned down 6-7 schools that are ranked higher than NYU as a whole–a couple of Ivies and the others were schools whose B-schools are part of the M7.

I wanted to be in NY, which has excellent internship opportunities and a solid lifestyle for four years.

I have a couple of questions:

What GPA should you have to be safe for junior year recruiting for Bulge Brackets as well as Elite Boutiques? Does your Junior fall grades get out in time to be calculated for the GPA cut-off or is your it only your freshman and sophomore year grades that get counted?

How many students from Stern does each bank usually take for Investment Banking or Sales & Trading? What is the distribution of stern students at these banks compared to other schools.

How important are internships for recruiting? Do more / better internships make up for a slightly lower GPA? What’s your advice regarding searching for internships?

How stressful / busy was recruiting for you? Any other advice you would be willing to share about it from yours and your friends’ experiences? How do you best position yourself for a successful recruiting season come junior year if you are in your freshman?

What are the best / funnest places to study abroad and the best time to go abroad?

In general people will tell you you should have at least a 3.5. As I mentioned above, with so many people in Stern interested in banking and with the cum laude mark set at 3.6, I think a GPA of 3.7+ is stronger for bulge brackets. However, with solid networking you can get an interview lower than these marks. Obviously the higher the better/easier.

In past years recruiting was all at a standard time but this year bulge brackets & some elite boutiques moved to an end of December application deadline, and so obviously fall grades hadn’t been calculated. For all of the January deadlines, you will have your jr. fall GPA calculated.

How many students from Stern does each bank usually take for Investment Banking or Sales & Trading? What is the distribution of stern students at these banks compared to other schools.
It varies by firm and by role obviously. Stern is a “target” school and so banks take proportionally more from Stern than they do from many other schools. There are MANY Stern alumni on Wall St from both undergrad and MBA. I’m not giving you a year-to-year number as it fluctuates a lot.

How important are internships for recruiting? Do more / better internships make up for a slightly lower GPA? What’s your advice regarding searching for internships?
Internships can be very helpful when recruiting, and certainly provide a “boost” to a resume if its a strong internship. The quantity doesn’t really matter in particular for example no one is going to be impressed by a bunch of mediocre internships. Internships are valuable as a networking resource (your bosses may refer you to places), educational experience and perhaps someone looking at your resume had the same job or knows your bosses.

Many people do a BAML wealth management or MS PWM internship as a stepping stone, and I just looked at CareerNet and asked alumni to refer me to jobs.

How stressful / busy was recruiting for you? Any other advice you would be willing to share about it from yours and your friends’ experiences? How do you best position yourself for a successful recruiting season come junior year if you are in your freshman?
It was stressful and busy. Don’t let negative experiences from one interview carry over to the next, especially if you have multiple in one day.

Maintain GPA, ECs, get internships.

What are the best / funnest places to study abroad and the best time to go abroad?
Most people go soph spring or junior fall–junior fall presents the disadvantage that you don’t get to do much last-minute networking.
My friends and I have enjoyed: London, Prague, Madrid. Paris and Berlin are okay. People have said Shanghai isn’t as exciting–however, you are able to travel throughout Asia if that’s a draw.

PS for those accepted to Stern, if you haven’t already seen:
<a href=“NYU Stern Class of 2017 | Facebook”>NYU Stern Class of 2017 | Facebook;

Is it true that Stern is kind of ostracized by the rest of NYU? From what I’ve seen, the general NYU populace doesn’t seem to fond of Sternies.

Does the gender gap make any difference in classes and group dynamics? I’m a girl and I read on a website that females only make up around 35% of Stern.

Just a few questions:

Was NYU’s financial aid support satisfactory? It’s apparently based on need/NYU’s desire for the student to attend.

This doesn’t exactly pertain to NYU, but in your opinion, would Boston University be a second-tier target school (considering its undergrad ranking has risen to #18)? I’m trying to decide between going to NYU’s Stern or BU’s SMG.

What is the NYU community like (e.g. in terms of school spirit)? Are people open/willing to help (especially during freshman year)?

What size is the average freshman class for a student at Stern?

What exactly is M7?

Thank you for answering these questions!

^I can probably answer 2 and 5 for you.

I don’t even think BU can be considered a semitarget. I’ve heard almost nothing of BU kids getting jobs on Wall Street. Don’t bother with the rankings, US News and Businessweek rankings generally only matter to overly involved parents and HS kids and schools that realize that they matter to overly involved parents and HS kids.

M7 are considered the top 7 business schools in America and the deans of these schools meet every once in a while to discuss curriculum and the direction of MBA education. They include Harvard (HBS), Stanford (GSB), Penn (Wharton), MIT (Sloan), UChicago (Booth), Northwestern (Kellogg), and Columbia (GSB). Keep in mind that these are MBA programs, not undergraduate business schools. You won’t even be applying to these until you’re like 25.
