NYU Stern Junior, AMA

Thanks for the answers Alwayslivewell! I have another question, how much business knowledge do students typically have before entering NYU? My mom owns a small business and both of my parents work with the stock market. I took economics this year and I’m taking personal finance right now but I haven’t done much else besides that.

And @nyuclassof2017, haha I’d be flattered if it was the tufts syndrome, but I doubt it. My stats just aren’t that great xD I’m guessing they just really liked my essays along with the fact that my school seems to have a good relationship with them.

@Pyrasical–you’re welcome! I hope that this is helpful.

It varies a lot from person to person. There are (very few–I would guess maybe a couple) people who already have a bit of finance knowledge, from quantitative analysis to banking (modeling, valuation) typically picked up from siblings or parents. There are also people who applied as a total crapshoot and knew nothing about business.

Generally, I think people fall somewhere in between with more people on the latter side of the spectrum. Personally, I hadn’t taken any business classes before entering but had kept up with publications such as WSJ, Economist, FT (although obviously I didn’t understand all of it).

After you start hanging out with upperclassmen, taking classes and working, you grow and develop your skill set.

Thanks, that’s reassuring to hear…I was thinking that maybe everyone would be way ahead of me lol. Also, are the students at Stern pretty liberal like the rest of the NYU population?

People tend to be more fiscally conservative at least, if not socially.

If I went to Stern, would I be able to cross school double major or do a dual degree? I was interested in doing Finance at Stern, and then take up a second Comp. Sci. major at CAS.

Short answer: yes.

@Alwayslivewell I have two questions. Firstly, looking up previous Stern threads and examining accepted high SAT and ACT scores, I am fearful of my chances to be accepted. My question is are there some students with particularly lower SAT or ACT scores such as 1950’s or do mostly all the stern students have 2100+? In addition, are there certain majors where students have lower SAT scores? Like Marketing or non math related subjects?
