Hey everyone,

I know everyone hates these threads, but I am in a deadlock between these two schools!

I currently want to study economics, and I know both schools are great for it. I REALLY like Tufts, but one of the main issues I have with it is that compared to Stern, internship opportunities as well as jobs after graduation will be harder to come by. Furthermore, I do LOVE NYC, but if I do end up going to Tufts, I would be fine in 'burbs where its campus is. Also, Finances aren't an issue for me.

Because I think I would want to go to a good business school after graduating (which needs at least 2-3 years of experience), going straight to a grad school would not be an option for me, which seems to be where Stern would be able to help me.

Furthermore, I heard Stern is VERY competitive, while Tufts seems to be a bit more relaxed.

Anyone have any advise on this matter?

Thanks!

If you want success go to Stern. If you want a traditional college experience, go to Tufts.

“if you want success go to Stern”? wow, that’s a little -dire-, isn’t it? if you work hard enough, you’ll find success at either school. they both have excellent programs.

have you compared the two curriculum between the departments? the faculty? coming to NYC for a summer to do an internship IS an option. companies recruit interns from colleges across the country.

since money isn’t a problem, all i can recommend is to visit both schools again before making a decision.

but please don’t think that being in Stern is some magic train to success. people DO succeed that aren’t in Stern.

however, from what you’ve written here, it seems quite clear that you want to go to Stern, considering how many reasons you wrote about why you like it. just my two cents.

haha kmhuenther, I admire your honesty.

missamericanpie: One of my main concerns about nyu is the lack of school spirit/ any community, and the cutthroat atmosphere of stern. In general, I think that Stern has higher pro’s then Tufts (jobs, internships, professors), but bigger con’s (lack of a real “community,” super competitive).

weirdly enough, i’ve noticed that there is this camaraderie among Stern students. yes, it’s super competitive, but i also notice that Stern students tend to hang out with each other.

we don’t have overwhelming school spirit, but there is a community at NYU- you just have to look for it. being a member of a club, running a club, joining greek life, playing a sport, getting involved in general is a great way to build your own community. your first year here will definitely help you build your own community of friends. i’m involved in activities and i don’t feel isolated at all.
