NYU Stern vs. UF

Hey I'm applying RD to Stern undergrad in Fall of '14 and I want to know if there's any chance of me getting any finanical aid/merit scholarships for NYU and whether or not it's worth it to get student loans. My parents make around 220-225k gross and I have one other sister and she's attends UF. My parent's salary has prevented me from getting pretty much any kind of financial aid in Florida so I want to know if I'll have any luck. I want to get an accounting and finance degree and eventually end up in some kind of consulting at a big firm. But realistically, even if my parents pay $20k a year I'm going to end up with over 100k in debt. I want to know if it's worth it to go to NYU and get the student loans or go to UF and pay around $3k a year (I have prepaid and bright futures). Also, by the time I graduate from high school, I'll have an AA from my local community college, so that means less time I'll spend in undergrad. I really just want to know if it's worth it to spend the money and go to NYU. Thanks in advance

It is worth it

It is ONLY worth it if the parents are willing to take out or cosign loans for NYU. If not, the student will not be able to secure loans in excess of the Direct Loan amount ($5500 for freshman year).

Personally I do NOT think it is worth it to go into that kind of debt for an undergraduate college education.

To the OP…if you are from Florida, do you qualify for Bright Futures? Is there an income ceiling for that?

$100K debt for two years at NYU vs UF for an undergrad accounting degree? After you parents pony up $20K a year? Really, really not worth it.

UF has a very competitive accounting program, and is much more likely than NYU to accept many of your DE college credits. Save the $$ and think about grad school!

Not worth it at all.

No, it isn’t worth it, UF is a great school & Stern is over rated. UF’s accounting program should set you up just as well as Stern’s.

I believe NiceStudent is a high school senior. I’m not sure how he/she would know the worth of any college degree over another.

It is not worth it.

You’re passing up paying $12,000 for your degree to spend over 100,000 at minimum (will probably end up to be 150,000 realistically) for a degree at a school that is no better.

Interesting post, I’m also going for Finance. UF seems like a good pick. NYU Stern is a scam for-profit private school. Don’t go to NYU, I know trust me. At least with UF you will get recruited by some international or national firms which will give you the opportunity to get the heck out of Florida! Florida is not a good state for young professionals looking to break into the finance/accounting field. Florida is a slave labor, union-busting, scab state.
University of Florida would be a good pick for you though.

That statement, coming from a Finance major, is rather funny. :)

It’s like a petroleum engineer complaining about the lack of environmental laws/red tape in Texas…

Funny, or about NYU students protesting against banks.
