NYU STERN vs. University of Chicago

For economics- Chicago
finance- Stern
but overall?

Overall, I would go to Stern.

My #1 S went to Uchicago and took many econ classes and majored in Math. He loved UChicago and had 4 job offers coming out of there. He is now working at a hedgefund in CT and lives in NYC. He has taken the first in the series of tests for the CFA. He passed the first. Uchicago has more of a campus feel than NYU.

My #2 S is a freshman at Stern in the Stern scholars program and loves it. It's a very different experience from Uchicago. He developed his own internship in CA for this coming summer (his girlfriend is from CA - also a Stern scholar. He wanted to be near her and play beach volleyball!) There are many opportunities for Stern students and esp. for Stern Scholars.

Both are great programs and you can't go wrong! Are you planning to eventually get an MBA or see about that later? I guess if you went the Uchicago route, you could get an MBA later after majoring in econ for ugrad. If you go the Stern route, you might not want to get an MBA later since there would be a lot of repeat type classes. My S who is a UChicago grad has stated to me that he is just going to do the CFA exams and forgo an MBA. WE'll see - he may change his mind but this is the less expensive way to go.

What are CFA exams?

Certified Fianancial Analyst exams. There is a website - try googling it I think they are recognized internationally. They are very difficult, in fact only 60% pass usually. At my S's work, there is peer pressure to take these exams. Five young employees incl. my son took them and 3 passed and two failed. You have to study a lot for them.

If you pass them, do u like get more money from ur employer or something?

Maybe after you pass all of them (I think there are 3). He did get a bonus this first year but I think that was based on his work rather than passing a test.

Oh...actually CFA stands for Chartered Financial Ananlyst

Ok I'll Google it.
