Sorry this is only partially a chances post. Could anyone give avg test scores etc for stern? I know numbers arent everyone but I'd appreciate a ballpark number as a good indicator. Thanks!

I think they're in the low 1400s.

I've heard 1412, but i am not sure for which year, class of '08 maybe?

So that would make it a little less competitive than an ivy? is that abt right?

higher than columbia, brown, penn, cornell, and places like duke and northwestern but lower than HYP

but its not as competitive as them right

one would assume that higher score implies at least equal competitiveness. Stern competes for the same students as Duke, Penn, etc.

uh oh .

"Stern competes for the same students as Duke, Penn, etc."

Well, Stern competes with Wharton and other top undergrad b programs for their students. i wouldn't say stern competes with UPENN but rather wharton.

"higher than columbia, brown, penn, cornell, and places like duke and northwestern but lower than HYP"

columbia has a higher avg SAT (college: 1409, engineering: 1444) even though it's twice the size of stern and upenn has the same avg SAT (1412) even though it is 4 to 5 times larger than stern. brown's avg sat (1390) is barely lower than sterns but brown is twice the size so there's obviously more variation. Same goes for cornell and northwestern; cornell is 5 times larger and northwestern is 3 times larger than stern yet their SATs are not far from stern's. Duke's enrollment is 6000 and its SAT range is 1350-1510 so i think it's safe to say their avg SAT is not lower than stern's.

not trying to argue i'm just stating the facts. (btw my number 1 choice is stern).

why does it say on princeton review that Columbia is a 1409 and Northwestern is 1399 then? and why would size matter, they are all private schools. obviously you can say since Stern has 500 per class, a lower score due to a URM (lets say 1200s) will affect the average SAt more than a 1200 at northwestern. basic statistics. and Stern doesn't just compete with bschools, it competes with the schools listed.

columbia COLLEGE is 1409, but columbia university has a higher SAT b/c the engineering school has an average score of 1444.

"Stern doesn't just compete with bschools, it competes with the schools listed."

If i'm majoring in philosophy or bio and i'm looking at upenn, duke, and northwestern, i'm not going to stern for that.... stern is for kids who want to major in business and possibly law.

obviously since stern is a business school. the question is where would you go for a economics or finance degree

i thought nyu's economics degree was in CAS not stern.

The econ. dept at NYU is a part of FAS (ie its a liberal arts dept. in CAS), but shared by both CAS and Stern econ. majors. There are plenty of CAS econ. majors. Most people in Stern major in finance and something else (perhaps econ.), I havent' known of many Stern kids who majored in just economics, though I'm sure they exist.

You can major in econ at Stern. It's a great idea if you plan for law school, because you get the liberal arts degree plus the business core course curriculum that comes with being in Stern
