Morningstar23, there really is no point in picking dorms closest to your studio. Alot of the studios have absolutely nothing to do with NYU, besides having been selected by the school as excellent centers of training, so most are no where near the dorms. My first dorm was on 26th street, and 1st avenue, while my studio was on 16th and 10th, over 2 miles difference, and by second and third were even further away from my studios. Now I was more of the extreme example, because I preferred living outside of the NYU bubble, but most of the people I know had dorms no where within the vacinity of their studios. But with the NY subway, and your own feet, I doubt you'll run into long commutes to get to studio. Pic whatever dorms suits you more, and the studio commute will be fine.

I read thru some of the posts here and now I remember reading somewhere that a certain high percentage of people are actually kicked out of Stern every year. What's that all about?

Hmm, I never heard that before. You shouldn't worry about that if you gain admission to Stern and continue working hard. You're obviously qualified if they admit you.

How is NYU's education program?
I want to be a teacher and eventually get a Ph.D is education and NYC is an amazing place to be, so NYU seems like a perfect fit.

Hey. I have a couple questions.
1. I'm applying for cinema studies at NYU, and yes, I know that film and tv is "amazing" etc, but what about cinema studies? How do you think it compares to other cinema studies programs in the states such as ones at Yale, USC, etc (I'm saving production for grad school).
2. Do people ever party in their dorms even though everyone probably goes out a lot? How strict is the campus alcohol policy ie are RAs really strict?
3. Do a lot of clubs scan? If you have a fake ID will you be able to get served somewhere?

Thanks

I also applied for CAS. I have 2 very quick concerns about NYU that I would have to have answered.

I would really like to have a campus atmosphere in college, and because NYU's buildings are very spread out, how would you compare the college life to a school that has a traditional campus?

What is the social life like? A lot of drugs? Are most students generally independent?

Thanks for any help

There was a great discussion about this a couple months back. Here is the address to that thread. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=27834

Its a big school in an even bigger city. There are just about as many potential social avenues as you can think of, so don't worry about their being too much of "this", not enough of "that". NYU's social scene can be best summed up as "fluid".

Okay, to put it bluntly, I'm an procrastinating student and my first two years of high school were soso (mainly 84s-86 average) with first year all honors except math and this year only two honors.

Do you think they'll accept me if I work harder and get at least a 92-93 average with good amount of EC and leaderships roles?

Anyone have info on the Music Industry program in Steinhardt?

Can we get some info on gallatin?

What are the students like? Workload? Atmosphere? Perks? etc.

Good looking females??

You're in New York City, I think they'll be some decent females everywhere you go

I certainly hope so! Do you meet alot of rich students at NYU?

I'm interested in this too. I'm a parent and sending my daughter to NYU is a lot of money. I hope everyone doesn't also spend a fortune on going out and clothes. Are there a lot of kids who have to watch their money?

Anyone know how hard pre-med classes in CAS are?

Calgone:
1. My suitemate is a cinema studies major, and I'm pretty sure he loves it. Contact me for more info.
2. A lot of people party in dorms with friends, and as long as you're not an idiot, you won't get caught. Obscenely loud music, a lot of noise, and the like will get you caught. Most people get busted during welcome week, if that's any indication. Most RA's don't try to bust you, but if it smells like a Jamaican greenhouse in the hall outside your room, you're asking for it.
3. A fake should work in most places, depending on its quality. The joke is that a library card will work at New York bars. I only spent 60 on mine, and it was 5 months before it got taken away (luckily I had a backup). If you spend 150, it'll work 99% of the time. If you pay 60's, it's a crapshoot, so it's basically a tradeoff of price for reliability. Most places won't scan.

Ochestramom:

Yes, I'm in it, and it's the best in the country, followed by some Tennesee school. Contact me for more info (although your child, not you, should be researching colleges and programs. I know you care, but if (s)he doesn't have the drive to do the research, what's the point?).

GRG:

Obviously(to answer both questions).

Amazon:
I don't think I bought a single article of clothing while I've been here (maybe a pair of jeans, I don't remember). My parents send me an allowance of 200 a month, and it generally sufficed for going out, though I did have to take from my savings for certain leisure expenses. I now have a restaurant job, and it pays several times what I get for allowance, which makes life easier and more fun. If your daughter wants to save money going out, she should "pregame" with her friends beforehand (it's a lot cheaper than a night's worth of $6 drinks).

Hope that was helpful, email/pm me for more info.

Aaron

Aaron,
Thanks for your response and your advice. My daughter is a sophomore and just beginning this journey. She'll be doing a lot of research on colleges and programs over the next year or so and it will be HER responsibility! She's at the stage of just assembling the first list and Mom and Dad have both been invited to throw out suggestions. -- at least for now! :)

Hey, I'm thinking about going to NYU Stern - Finance but I'm definitely not getting any financial aid at all. On the other hand, I'm probably getting a full 4-year scholarship to University of Maryland's Smith School of Business (ranked 20th for undergrad by US News).

After I graduate, I want to be working on wall street. Based on that, can anyone give me some advice on which school to pick? I mean, people say Stern Finance is worth it, but worth....how much exactly? Does anyone know exactly on average how much Stern Finance people make when after graduation? Since it's either 175K of debt or free ride + 15,000, I want to make sure it's a good investment.

Thanks for your help =]

with the ID thing... if you have a good fake will it matter if you clearly are 21 (and they can tell)?
