Hi! I am interested in art school and am looking into NYU as an option. Does anyone know anything about the summer high school art intensive program? Is it hard to get into? I know someone who did the summer film program and just got accepted to NYU. He said going in the summer gave a good taste of what NYU is like. Any details would be great!
Shawn Abbot(bascially he’s the one who writes us emails and say - congrats you got in. sorry you didn’t)personally STATED in an interview that their precollege program is a revenue-generating business, and does not place you at an advantage at all.
Actually went back to find it for you on New York Times:

Shawn Abbott, the assistant vice president of admissions at New York University, said that university’s summer program for high school students carried little weight for the admissions committee.
“Every student who completes an application will be a different person, so I can’t say that I would recommend any kind of recipe or agenda for how a student should spend their summer,” he said. “At N.Y.U., we have a summer program that is a revenue generating machine, and that’s why that program exists.”
Hard to get into? No.
Will it give you a taste of what NYU is like? Absolutely not. You are not doing college course, not being graded by NYU freshman standard, not with college people.
It will give you a taste of what NYC is like, on the other hand.
My D’s both did pre-college programs at NYU. One in MT through Steinhardt and the other the art program that @lilmim23 is asking about. Without doubt, both programs were run very much like their undergraduate programs and gave students a real sense of what classes are like.
In both cases, D’s decided to attend NYU after going to the summer program. Both programs do ask for auditions or portfolios, but I am not sure how selective they are. Once there, though, they expect you to work hard.
The art program gave D a real sense of the contemporary art world and what conceptual art is about. She loved being in the city and her summer experience made her adjustment as a freshman easy.
D is currently a junior, so feel free to ask any questions about the summer or undergraduate program.
Good luck!
