NYU Tisch Film chance me!

Female, Asian/White. I applied to NYU Tisch Film & TV BFA under the Early Decision I deadline for enrollment in Fall 2012.

SAT Reasoning Test w/ Writing: 670 Critical Reading, 520 Math, 640 Writing and 8 on the essay (I took them 3 times and this was the best I could do)

ACT w/ Writing: 26 composite score, but I took it again on October 22nd and am expecting at least two to three points of an increase.

GPA (weighted/7 point scale): 3.9697

Class Rank (Exact): 41 out of 275 (at the most academically competitive public school in my region)

All AP Classes (Current and past): AP World History, AP US History, AP Government and Politics, AP English Literature and Composition, AP English Language and Composition, AP Biology, and AP Statistics (the only exams I've taken so far are APWH, APUSH, and APEL&C. I got a 4 on English but a 2 on both of the history exams)

In addition to my high school, I've been attending a secondary specialty school for a four-year Mass Communications course. This school is selective and I had to apply in eighth grade in order to be considered for enrollment. I will graduate with honors in June in addition to graduating with honors from my regular high school.

I have a strong resume that reflects:
-Summer internship with an advertising firm
-Work Experience (paid) including videography gigs such as filming and producing local wedding videos
-Extensive volunteer/community involvement
-Club involvement with leadership positions (Vice President of National History Club, BETA club officer, Captain of Forensics Debate team, President of local branch of National SkillsUSA organization, etc)
-Athletics: Track and Cheerleading (Four years varsity)
-Honors; nominated for Civic Seal and Governor's Early College Scholars. I was ranked 10th in the country including Puerto Rico at a national competition for Extemporaneous Speaking. I was awarded third place at the state level competition for Pre-Produced w/ Special Effects Public Service Announcement video. I have received multiple silver medals for exemplary scoring on the Television Production Technical exams at state level competitions.

I have letters of recommendation from my guidance counselor, math teacher, and media production teacher. I know you can only have three, but I also mailed a letter of rec from the CEO of the advertising firm I interned at along with my transcripts and Early Decision agreement just in case.

As for the essays and portfolio, I'm fairly confident. My essays were strong and personal according to the teachers and peers who reviewed them, and I spent a lot of time on them. For the creative submission I wrote/directed/produced/etc a short film, and I can honestly say it is the best work I've ever done. My media production teacher told me that he had a student a few years ago who got accepted to Tisch Film & TV, and that he thinks my film is much better than that student's.

Any feedback? I would appreciate any response, I just want to know if I have a chance :/ It's worth a shot right!? I find out on December 15th...

^It is brimming with enthusiasm how much you want to come to NYU.
You don’t tell us where you are from, it might be something that matters.
NYU got lots of smart somewhat Asian girls like you.
I am assuming doing ED (full pay!?!?) will help but who am I to tell you that?
You did everything right. maybe SAT ACT and AP score could have been higher but too late for that.
What’s done is done, and you did quite alot.
let it go, and do cook up plan B to Z just in case.
Having THE dream school is great, everything you do simply point to that direction and you’d start justifying like, “I just have to get in, it feels so right, there is no other way” but when that doesn’t happen, it feels like the whole world crumbling under your feet, somehow forgetting about knowing from the start how hi-reach the school was to begin with, or how fierce the competition was going to be.
I didn’t believe it before when other people said
“everything happens for reason” “It all works out in the end”
now I kind of living in that.
So
if you get in, great, congrats!
If you are rolled over or WL-ed, stick to it and see what happens.
If you are rejected, I am sure you’ll be ended up somewhere that as good.
relax and enjoy what you do (cheerleading!!) while still in HS.

I’m from Roanoke Virginia! And yes i’m applying for financial aid haha full pay would be craaazy. for nyu ed there is no waitlist or deferral unfortunately ha you’re either in or youre not:/ but thank you for your support and everything i really appreciate it! nyu obviously is my number one school but im also applying to vcu arts cinema ba, and if i dont get into either school i will just go to vcu regular studies i guess

do you think i have a chance of getting into nyu?

I am from Canada and applied Tisch ED also. What is your backup plan if you don’t get in?

Look at my reply to bears, that’s my backup plan! what are your stats/backup plan?

No roll over? at all? what about ED2?
well, it might be easy that way… either you do or you don’t.

Roanoke!! nice college there used to send us stuff. How is that school?
You are lucky you got nice backup.
I do hear more and more good thing about VCU.
Good luck to you

My backup plan is Syracuse, Emerson, Chapman and USC.

If you are in film Emerson Chapman and USC (in that order) are extremely competitive and shouldn’t be considered safety admits, no matter how good your stats are. Don’t know about Syracuse admission %. All excellent choices but not safeties. Looked at good Canadian schools?

No much in Canadian schools for Film/TV. I have been in the industry as a professional actor at a very young age and you need to really be where the connections are. But when I’m applying regular decisions to Emerson, Chapman, USC and Syracuse I will also apply to Concordia in Quebec and maybe a few other choices.

Update: My october 22nd act composite score is a 30. now what are my chances?

I got in as a transfer, so I didn’t need to submit ACT / SAT scores, but I only was able to get as high as a 26 on the ACT. Obviously, a 30 is better.

Nobody can claim to know exactly what ones chances of getting into Tisch are, but I feel that they’re looking for a passion for visual storytelling along with decent academics. Passion can’t be judged through statistics. However, your statistics seem good enough to be admitted.

Also, if you do get into Tisch, know that NYU has some of the worst financial aid in the nation. Film school, especially undergrad, by no means guarantees financial success, so think about that before going into massive debt.
