I can't decide between the two. I was given a scholarship at DePaul that would make the school substantially less expensive, but NYU is still doable. I was just wondering which people would choose if given the choice.

Hasn’t the deadline for decisions passed?

I was originally waitlisted at DePaul so I have some time to reply.

It sounds like you prefer Tisch but DePaul is less expensive? A financial decision is private. You can’t really ask others to make that decision for you. If your dream school is Tisch and you don’t care for DePaul then a $20,000 difference might not matter as much, or it might matter a lot; or a $50,000 would matter a lot, or it might not. Or Tisch may not be your dream school, but only a bit more preferable to you.

Is there any way you can narrow down these variables for yourself? If money were not an object, would you prefer Tisch? By how much? What debt would you be in? Have you done a budget for monthly repayments post-grad?

Also take location into consideration. Where do you live? Tisch may be more expensive, but if you have to fly to DePaul (you, your parents to see shows…) the costs could end up evening out anyway. Also New York v. Chicago. Which city would you rather live/work in?

DePaul is a smaller program, but once broken down into groups class sizes are similar.

Are academics important? Do you want to explore other interests/pursue a minor? Certain schools might be more apt to let you do that.

Which people do you click with the most? Where do you feel “right”? Both are great choices, each have their pros and cons. Honestly, I’d say go with your gut. It is the next 4 years of your life, choose the school that will make you the most comfortable and happy.

Have you visited both schools? If at all possible, you should – including a visit to Stella Adler studio. When my son was trying to choose between Tisch and another school, his visit to Adler really helped him with his decision.

How long do you have to make the decision? I assume you have deposited at NYU

I may not have the ability to make a decision, but that’s complicated and I won’t get into it (right now I’m going to DePaul). I cannot visit DePaul in time for the decision deadline which is May 15. I have, however visited NYU.

So as of right now…the question is moot? Best wishes on the journey- I hope you love where you end up

The shows at DePaul are fantastic and their new Theatre School facilities are state of the art and gorgeous. My D got into Tisch but not DePaul, and if she had got into DePaul, I know that she would’ve chosen it over Tisch in a heartbeat. Good luck to you.

@sherryjane73 - is your D going to be attending Tisch?

You have to go with your heart. Less debt would be such a blessing entering into the real world. I’d personally pick DePaul because Chicago still such an amazing theatre city. So much happens there. Plus, if I’m not mistaken, there’s smaller class sizes? But then again, NYU is obviously incredible.
Just please promise me, do not lie to yourself. If your heart is set on one over the other, but you feel obligated to attend the other, please attend where your heart lies.

I have another take on this. Two of my kids are graduating in a few weeks and just went through the exit loan counseling for their Stafford loans. If you think you could be happy at the less expensive school, go for it.

Also-- it is May 8. I assume you’ve now decided?

@toowonderful my D chose the smaller conservatory at Fordham over the bigger one at Tisch! Very excited. And I know that @glassharmonica’s D is there and loves it.

@sherryjane73 - best of luck to her!

Thanks @toowonderful, same to you and yours! What a relief to be here, with the decisions made, deposits paid. Our kids are headed to The Big Apple!
