NYU Tisch: Wasted General Education?

This may sound silly, but I have a few concerns about Tisch's General Education Class. I've heard from current NYU students that general education (basic core class) for Tisch students are usually some-what of a joke.
I am ED for Film Production at Tisch, and my parents, after hearing about the general education, are starting to voice concerns about the education in relate to the tuition cost. I have spent high school in a national ranked IB program and I think my parents are just concerned that they will be spending 60,000 a year for me to have my IB education rot.
Can anyone give me more information about Tisch core classes? Are they really as bad as I have been led to believe?

I was under the impression that Tisch students take the same core classes as all the NYU undergrads.

That may be correct (I do not know much about it) but I guess then my question would apply to the general education classes as a whole.

huh? The Gen Ed classes are taken through the College of Arts and Sciences, so Tisch students are getting the same education as the other NYU students. The required core classes for Tisch are specific to the discipline. All NYU students are required to take Writing the Essay freshman year, and Tisch students take that within Tisch, as it focuses on Art and the World.

Very few NYU students who have completed Writing the Essay will consider it a joke class! D had to take 2 semesters of it for her vocal performance major in Steinhardt.

I apologize, I must be mistaken.

Honestly, if your applying for film, that means it should be your PASSION and that you want to make a career out of it. Your going to Tisch to become a better filmmaker, not a mathematician or whatever so you shouldn’t be concerned with your GE classes, you will get what you paid for through your film classes…the best (or 2nd best to USC in some ppls opinion) in the world.
