NYU Unfriendly?

Hey!

So, my first choice for colleges is USC.. and I'm aware of the major differences between USC and NYU (grassy campus, spacious, more community, school spirit) but the thing is I know my shot at USC is only barely scraping the "likely" mark. If rejected, I was just planning to going to college in my hometown for a year then apply for transfer. But I realized, and always have kind of known, that it's time for me to get out of here and move on. Being at home isn't really something that's important to me.

The only thing holding me back from applying is the fear of not making friends.

I've heard some things about the NYU community being more 'reserved', and that people keep to their close group of friends. I've also heard there's pretty much no party/social scene. I doubt these things can be 100% true, so I'm hoping someone can enlighten me on this?

Thanks!! :)

NYU can be anything from nerdy, Saturday-night-playing-board-games to fratty, party-every-week (and everything beyond). At NYU, you have all of NYC youth to make friends with. You just need to make the right friends. That being said, if you’re afraid of not making friends, there is a good chance you will not make a lot of friends. And there’s definitely a significant lack of school-wide community.

NYU is very similar to USC in many respects, minus the campus and minus the sports.

Because it’s such a large university you’re bound to find people you’ll get along with who want to do the same things you do - if that’s go out every week (there aren’t big dorm parties, there’s clubbing/going out to bars usually), hang out all the times, whatever else you might want.

NYU students, at least in my experience when I was there, are generally quite friendly; I never had any problems making friends in my courses. There is a lack of a school-wide community, but that never affected my experience.

I think it really depends on how outgoing you are and how much of a community you’re looking for.

When we say there’s a lack of school-wide community, it’s more-so non-existent. I think it also depends on which hall you live in freshman year. I live in U-Hall and we’re not very social on my floor (other floors are apparently) but the traditional freshman dorms like Hayden and Weinstein seem to be closer and everything.

Party-wise: There’s parties, you just have to know the right people to find them.

Like I said, it really depends on what you’re looking for. I guess, contrary to the other comments, I think being here is a little difficult socially because on normal campuses everyone/everything is close together.

It really depends on your personality.

NYU is definitely very diverse. If you’re stuck with an unsocial freshman hall, it may seem hard to make friends at first. But there’s always clubs, classes, and Greek life, so if you want to make friends, you definitely will if you put yourself out there. You just have to find like-minded people.
