Hi guys. So I just got into NYU for Spring admission, and am currently committed to Brandeis. I really like both schools for different reasons:
I love Brandeis because of the small, tight-knit community, and the fact that it’s a very open and accepting community. I do not love the campus and the fact that it’s in Boston because although I spent this year abroad and would love to be close to my family (I’m from near Boston), I really struggle with the cold there and the people can be very unfriendly. I am also very interested in nutrition / food science and unfortunately, Brandeis does not offer that major so I would have to study psychology (which I am still interested in, I just don’t know if it’s the career path I want to take and am more passionate about nutrition). The level of the classes / professers is excellent at both schools, which is why I only compared majors.
Now in terms of NYU, I really like the abundance of opportunities there and when I visited in December I took a tour in and fell in love with the vibe of the campus, unlike at Brandeis, where I did not really enjoy the campus and after the tour I didn’t even want to apply. As much as I like NYU, NYC is a huge city that is easy to get lost in, although I feel like I will get involved with the things going on campus, it will just take more effort and won’t be handed to me as much as at Brandeis.
I think it comes down to this:
NYU offers the major that I want with one of the best programs in the country, more opportunities, and it is and has always been “my dream school”, but I am afraid that starting in the Spring and living in NYC in general will be very hard to adjust to and that I will feel lonely and out of place.
Brandeis is the safer option, with a smaller, more “accepting” community, that has a very unique liberal quirky feel to it, it is closer to home, but the winter in Boston really depresses me and intially when applying to college I was against staying in Boston because I wanted to experience a new city.
Based on this, what do you guys think I should do? I am not looking for a “go to NYU” or “go to Brandeis” because that is something that I have to decide for myself, but I am I am craving your input!! If you have any more info about spring admission / know people that have gone through it or have experienced a similar dilemma, I would love to know! I have 70 hours to decide so every piece of advice / info is welcome!!
@sgxfit18: After reading your post, it does not seem as though either school is a great fit for you.
Which US schools offer the best nutrition / food science majors ?
Do you have any other options ? Are you willing to take a gap year & reapply to other schools ?
I am currently on a gap year and I think that both schools are a good fit for me. I just listed all my concerns which is why it may seem that way to you, but I would be happy going to either school. I am really grateful that I have two amazing schools as options, two schools that have significantly higher average GPA and SAT scores than mine and that according to my stats I had a pretty low chance of getting into. The question for me is more which school and why.
NYU is the better choice because it has your major, is a bit warmer than Boston in Winter, and has cheaper flights to Florida if you need a break from the cold weather.
If money is no issue, go to NYU. They have an excellent nutrition program both at the undergraduate and graduate level. i have been to guest lectures and am impressed.
I’ve seen a number of people across various colleges worry about spring admissions programs. With one exception (not one of the ones mentioned in this thread) it seems the colleges make a concerted effort to make these students feel party of the community when they arrive on campus, as well as having a large enough spring contingent so that the students on it don’t feel “other”.
^part of the community, though I guess party might work too…
