I’ve seen a few threads comparing NYU to Georgetown but none of them were related to the science aspects of both schools. I’m going to be on a pre-med track and am looking to get into a top tier medical school after my four years of undergraduate courses. Which school provides better resources and connections for students going into medicine? Thanks so much :))
(( I am also kind of looking into Vassar and Colgate but I don’t think they have strong pre-med tracks. I could be wrong though.))
Science sucks at Georgetown. There. I said it. The students literally boast that they are not required to take science for most majors. You will not find a lot of science-y people at Georgetown. I totally wouldn’t go there for pre-med.
Really? I thought that it has changed. What initially attracted me was their early assurance program into medical school and their new science building. @mommyrocks
You might want to revisit your assumptions with some proper research about Colgate and Vassar.
See their websites for courses, facilities, advising and outcomes. You will learn about new buildings, too. Then visit and/or contact their staff for specific information pertinent to your interests.
Here is a starting point straight from colgate.edu:

Go 'gate!
Georgetown isn’t really a STEM school. Ultimately, your admission to medical school will depend on your grades + MCAT + extracurriculars.
I am not sure NYU is a STEM powerhouse either.
NYU does have a stronger STEM tradition than Georgetown. That said, you don’t need a strong STEM tradition or a school particularly strong in the sciences to go to medical school - you just need a good premedical curriculum and advising. And Georgetown does have a solid reputation within the health sciences, with its own medical school and good programs in other health sciences. They seem to have a decent pre-health advising office too (https://premed.georgetown.edu/).
Really, it doesn’t matter where you to go to undergrad to go to medical school - particularly if you are comparing top colleges. Vassar and Colgate would be great choices, too. You can’t go wrong.
Thank you all for the help! I’m visiting each school to learn more about what they offer but I don’t think Georgetown is necessarily my top choice now.
@mommyrocks How is it that you are knowledgeable about Georgetown (GT) science? My daughter is trying to decide between GT and Notre Dame for pre-med type studies. Like you, I am a lawyer, but I am not really familiar with the pre-med or science program of GT (or Notre Dame, for that matter). Thank you!
@lawdogmom My daughter and I toured Georgetown specifically with an interest in their science programs, and we asked a lot of questions. It was very disappointing. Of course, everyone can reach their own conclusions based on their alternatives and preferences.
Personally, I would largely base my decision off of which school is providing you with the most financial assistance as medical school also has a hefty price tag…
