Hi,
New York University (NYU) or Imperial College London (ICL) for a Master in Computer Science (MS. CS) ?

NYU by a mile. Stronger faculty, global recognition, better overall program. Not to sound ignorant, nobody in the US knows what ICL is. While you’re at it, look into Stony Brook. Ranked far, far higher than both in Computer Science, for a fraction of the price. Freshman year, I was accepted in NYU POLY, but I passed on it. Simply not worth it’s price-tag.

How would you compare NYU Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (not NYU POLY) for CS with Stony Brook ?

I think NYU Courant and Stony Brook are about the same for CS. But I would pick Stony Brook due to its lower tuition.

I think Stony Brook is on a whole different level, and should not be compared to NYU.

Let’s analyze the programs;
Stony Brook has more labs, better faculty, and conduct far more research than NYU. Think Brookhaven National Lab, CEWIT, and a new building for Computer Science to keep up with it’s alarming growth.

NYU has a space problem, and get’s its butt kicked every time they meet in a competition(think ACM, where SBU competes with Ivy’s, and aside from winning – it’s almost always top 3 or top 5 in the region).

With a $100-150 million new CSE building on it’s way, and the 5 new faculty members just hired – not attending Stony Brook, and choosing an expensive for no reason school like NYU is a grave mistake.

Google, Microsoft and many other companies already know about SBU, and they even go as far as visiting the undergrad classes to give them ‘gifts’. :)

For rankings, SBU is ranked way above NYU, and most of the time even above Columbia. National Research council, which actually tells you what they use has to say the following(you can change the preferences to what you prefer and it will generate the respective rankings from it’s data)

Nearly every survey places SBU ahead of NYU, and given it’s affordable tuition – it’s a no brainer!

For grad school, the difference between NYU and SBU is more nuanced, and depends a lot more on the subfield. For instance, NYU is much more well regarded for theory. And I’m not sure why ACM is relevant for grad school.

Unless you really want to have a shot in America, Imperial is the better school for MS CS. It has an excellent global reputation, and its CS is one of the most oversubscribed programs there. Graduates are 100% employed and are some of the highest paid out there.

A M.S. in CS?..unless you plan on getting a PhD…why?
