NYU vs. Northwestern for Undergrad Journalism Major

I've been researching about the major for a while and came to a conclusion that Northwestern is probably a better choice for undergrad.
But wouldn't living in NYC be beneficial? Considering better chances of getting internships and such.
Plus, I am an international student applying from Thailand, so I'll be facing some financial issues. If I choose to go for NYU, I can stay with relatives in NYC instead of paying for a dorm and other living expenses.

What do you guys think?

Why don’t u apply for both, and wait to see which one got u in?? For journalism major, i think both NU and NYU are distinctive in the area…hm… considering the surrounding city, I would say,NYC is definitely better…U could get some extraordinary opportunies related to your major there…
wait, I have a serious question here. The financial crisis may probably cut the opportunities of summer jobs in NYC, Will it also affect NYU internship system, since there is a great many laid off workers in the city?

i don’t know much about Northwestern’s program. however, here at NYU, you are REQUIRED to double major as a journalism major. i don’t know if that has an impact on where you choose to apply. the journalism major here is very competitive, but very rigorous. the intro classes for the journalism major are difficult and are intended to “weed out” people that don’t have what it takes to cut it in the major.

as a media major here, we do have a lot of connections to newspapers and news stations. on thursday night, we had an alumni roundtable and there representatives from ABC, NY Times, CBS News, all talking about their careers and internship possibilities.

if you’re going to be commuting into NYU, that’s a huge burden off you financially.

another option is going to Northwestern, but applying for internships during the summer here in NY. you could live with family during the summer and just intern for three months, and then go back to Northwestern for the fall.

just an idea.

good luck!

Thanks guys!
I most likely will apply to both schools, but which one should I apply early to? My first choice right now is probably NYU, considering the surrounding city and such.
And also, NYU is harder to get into, right?

Oh and to missamericanpie, I’ve read on the website about the dual degree thing. I have no idea what other major would go along with Journalism. I was thinking maybe politics or something? But I’m not really into that… hmm. What do you think?

depends what you want to report on. media? politics? economics? cinema studies? you could even do something like gender studies.

your advisor (if you choose to apply to NYU and you get in) could help you figure out what the other major could be.

If the dual-major program takes you five year at NYU, then you’d need to recalculate the cost to see which one is actually cheaper. Most journalism students at Northwestern are double-majors (though not a requirement) and they graduate in 4 years. Internationals can apply for FA at Northwestern but the admission is not need-blind (i.e., your admission chance is affected if you ask for FA). In general, Northwestern’s journalism is regarded as the cr

wait so all dual-major programs at NYU are five years?

No, you should still graduate in 4 years at NYU. NU is all terms of journalism now, so it’s not just print for undergraduate.

Northwestern’s journalism program is definitely harder to get into and is among the best in the country. And yes, they do offer a lot of NYC internships that would allow you to go there during the summer.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I’ll just have to apply to both and hope for the best!

Not to hijack the thread, but I’m also interested in journalism. I was wondering, does NYU students have a lot of internship opportunities? I know the website have an impressive list of places that students recently interned at, but that list is the same one that I read 2-3 years ago, so I’m not too sure if it is accurately reflecting the general situation of journalism students. How many people actually get to intern for national news channels like CNN and NBC? Is there a big/tight alumni network? Supposedly Syracuse has a tight alumni network where the alums are very dedicated in helping new graduates finding work. Can anyone comment on the alumni network of Northwestern and NYU?
