Hi I have a bit of a dilemma. I got accepted to both NYU and Purdue but NYU didn't give me any aid. My father is unemployed and my mother can only contribute about 5000 a year to my education.Purdue gave me $40,000 ($10,000 per year). I am planning to be a finance major and got accepted to both schools business schools. what do you guys think would be the best choice, is NYU worth it? to take out the loans?

It depends…after graduating from NYU, do you think you’d be able to pay off yout debt yourself once you get a job?

If you don’t think you can, choose Purdue.

There’s a limit to how much you can borrow in loans each year–$5500 the first year and up to $7500 by the last. Keep in mind that some of those are unsubsidized, meaning they are accruing interest from the moment you begin receiving the money.

I am planning on joining a career in investment banking or consulting and Purdue doesn’t seem to have a very strong finance program while NYU has the 2nd best in the nation (according to US news). I’m also afraid of the lack of recruitment by large firms at Purdue.

You can’t take out enough loans to afford NYU even if you want to - and you would be positively stupid to do so if it was possible. Thankfully, it is not.

Purdue gave you a pretty generous offer - but even that might not be affordable if you’re out-of-state. Are you an Indiana resident?

im from Illinois.

If the social scene, etc at Purdue is attractive to you, go there, do well for two years and then transfer to NYU. You’ll save over 100k that way.
