I am going to be a freshman in college and I got into NYU for Sports Management and UMiami for Finance. I was wondering which one would have been the better choice. While NYU is the better school, the Sports Management degree is not as appealing to employers as a Finance degree. I would like to work in either field so that was not a factor in my decision but I’m just not sure which should have been more important to me: the school or the degree? Which option would like land me a better job/career Sports Management from NYU or Finance from UMiami? Thanks!
Which career appeals to you more? Were you denied at NYU Stern?
Have you done your research/considered your preferences?
–Have you researched the types of jobs available to someone graduating with a Sports Management degree? Talked to people in the department, in career placement?
– Have you researched what types of jobs finance majors from UMiami can get? Talked to people in the department, in career placement?
–Have you looked at the curriculum for each major at each school online to see if you have a preference?
–Have you considered the college environment you prefer – ex.do you want a traditional campus, do you like big time sports. etc.
–Also keep in mind that to an extent your job opportunities will be as a result of other things including: GPA, how well you interview, internships done, involvement on campus etc.
I wouldn’t say that NYU is a better school overall. It may have more name recognition amongst the public but UMiami and NYU are both excellent schools with likely roughly equal educational quality.
Personally I think the college/school is far more important than the specific degree. Most fields don’t require any specific major or degree; the vast majority of people working in sports management, for example, probably don’t have a sports management undergrad major (most colleges don’t actually offer it as a major anyway). Conversely, you can also work in finance without a finance major. So your choice should really be based upon where you think you can get the best all-around experience, education and environment included.
It sounds like you already made your choice, though, based on your language (“would have been,” “was not a factor,” “should have been”). So is this a moot point?
If the cost is the same, it will come down to new york city vs coral gables, those are pretty different environments, I would go with NYU if things are still even, NYC will give you a lot of opportunities for internships in finance or sports mgmt.
Don’t major for undergrad on either field, you are cheating yourself off a better education al experience. You can take Finance or Sports Management in grad school or through a certificate.
Don’t major in Sports Management. Especially since you have such a wonderful other option! I would choose Miami. You can do finance and take other business classes there. Do your internship in sports.
If you are starting this Fall, this seems like buyers remorse. If you selected NYU, is Miami even still an option at this point?
I checked your history and you posted this in April. I knew I remembered this question, although there may be another poster’s similar thread that you could find. Sorry you didn’t get replies then. I don’t have a good answer so I didn’t reply although I completely disagree that majoring in finance is cheating your education experience. I also think if you are locked in to NYU, you will find good options.
