Both of these schools are very similar in many respects. They are both large school; however, one is public and one is private. They are both located in/near major cities. The price for both schools are very similar. I received some grant from NYU and very little from UCLA. So money is not a factor.

Criteria that is important in my decision:
*Good academic programs
*College experience
*Research opportunities
*Student Body
*Profesors

Alright so which school should I choose? Which school would you choose?

Thanks.

I’m in the exact same position as you, so I’d like to hear the comparisons between the two as well.
I’m premed by the way, what are you going to study?

Either Premed, engineering, econ, pretty much anything haha. Im open to all majors.

I don’t see the locations as similar. NYU is smack dab in the biggest city in the country. You can hop on a subway or bus or walk around quite easily.

Well the city aspect isn’t that important. At both school school I will have some access to the city. I’m more concern with the academics, college experience, professors, and student body. Which school has a more motivated student body, by that I do not mean only in academics but more so in service (volunteering, passion, etc)?

I know both are very active in community service - they’re located in the biggest cities in the country. More important is the college experience. UCLA has much more of a homey, college feel - all the buildings are on one (albeit enormous) campus, including your dorms and classes and gyms and whatnot. NYU is scattered around Greenwich Village, which can be exciting, but maybe a bit too much independence to handle at once.

Then again, my opinion is totally biased. I’m a Bruin, after all.

Based on your criteria I would go with UCLA.
UCLA has great academic programs, a great college experience, great and plentiful research opportunities, a diverse and vast student body, and world-class professors.

^ and NYU doesn’t have all of the following as well?

Well, since I’m in the same boat as you, I’ll put in my thoughts too.

The two aren’t similar. They’re opposites. Campus vs. no campus, athletics vs. no athletics, public vs. private, L.A (west coast) vs. NYC (east coast).

I think the fact that the two are so incredibly different is the reason the choice is so hard to make. In reality it depends on where you are, where you want to be, and what kind of experience you’re looking for. NYU is by no means a traditional college experience, UCLA will give you the traditional experience. UCLA isn’t exactly living in a city, NYU is right smack in the middle (of a very nice neighborhood, like UCLA in westwood).

It really comes down to where rather than what. Both have large classes, competitive majors, plenty of research opportunities, really diverse student bodies, and great academic programs.

I’ve visited both, I’ve seen a lot of nyu b/c of my proximity to it, and honestly I don’t know which to choose either. Hopefully this helps you.

oh and i wanted to say that much of the realization that I’ve had over what the actual decision comes down to is because of some very helpful people on this site. So, kudos to those people for being a huge help.

Supa_Ramga: I’m sure NYU has all of those characteristics as well. But UCLA is just a bit bit better in the academics category and diversity category… and the weather is probably a lot better in SoCal (not part of his criteria, but still a plus).
