Hi everyone! So I was recently admitted to both NYU and U Mich as a transfer student and I will be an upcoming sophomore.I was wondering what school you guys think I should choose. I spent my first year at University of Wisconsin Madison which I really did not like simply because it was not the right fit. I am from the US but have grown up abroad for 13 years primarily in major cities and when I came to Wisconsin I found that there was a huge in state croowd that only hung out together. The school was very big and I could not find much to do. It seemed that everyone already knew eachtoher because they were all from familiar towns and I was kinda on the outside. As a transfer I applied to east cost, mainly city private universites because I thought they would bring students from all over the US as well as from abroad with exception to Michigan because it was my top choice in HS. In addition, the major I want to study is business. I was accepted to NYU into the college of arts and sciences (so not the business school) but I was accepted to Michigan’s business school which is an amazing opportunity and I am uncertain which school to choose. I feel that at michigan I would be happy academicialy but maybe not socially and I am worried that I may have the same experience I had at Wisconsin. And at NYU i feel like i would fit in socially but i woulld not be able to study my intended major. What do you think i should do?
Hi there! I was also faced with the choice of deciding between U of M and NYU. Ultimately, I chose NYU. As someone who is from Michigan and has been to the campus a lot, I will tell you that is probably a lot like - if not exactly like - UW Madison. It’s a big state school, and a lot of people already know each other from high school. However, there’s still tons of opportunities to make friends. But I believe if you stuggled with this at UW, you might find the same problem at U of M as it’s the same set-up. Despite this though, U of M’s business school is amazing and top-rated so I see why you’re stuggling. To contrast, NYU is probably the complete opposite of U of M, in terms of social life. It doesn’t revolve around football games and tailgates, and it’s more about city life. However, I do warn you that you have to make a slight effort to make friends at NYU because of this. For me personally, NYU was the better option because I’m more of a city person who didn’t want a traditional college experience. All in all, I can’t make the decision for you but I can only tell you what I know from my extensive experience from both schools. You have to weigh out what you value more. Both are great schools, but I do warn you that UW and U of M are very similar, so if the reason you transferred is because you didn’t want a traditional college experience, choose NYU. But you have to face the consequence of not being able to study at Stern at NYU (which by the way, CAS econ is good too - but it is still ranked lower than U of M Ross).
@pizzaandpeonies thanks for that information its really helpful!!! I was wondering if you thought it would be different because Im in Ross so theres less in state and its smaller?
also @pizzaandpeonies are you happy with your decision to attend NYU or do you sometimes wish you chose U of M and what was the deciding factor for you?
I can’t really speak on Ross with full understanding but there’ll definitely be a lot of those who don’t know each other, but U of M is definitely one of those schools where you mingle with people from all schools so you’re not closed off. If that makes sense. I’m really happy with my decision of NYU and I know out of all the schools in the country, it’s the best one for me. I do not regret it one bit. There were a bunch of deciding factors for me, ranging from its diversity and the fact that it offers you a lot of internships. The city is a plus too. However, each person is different and NYU may not be the school for you, that’s for you to decide.
