I am trying to decide whether to go to UMich or NYU. I live on Long Island, so the city is only half and hour away. I want to have to have a real college experience and at Michigan, I feel like I can have that. On the otherhand, NYU is closer to my family. Michigan is a 10 hour drive where NYU is just a train ride away. I do love the city and think I would have fun there too. What should I do?

What are you interested in studying? Both are excellent schools, but each school has an edge over the other depending on the area of study.

If you want a real college experience, there is no question which school to attend. Michigan.

Iâd go to Michigan. Even if you got no scholarships, the cost is probably equal. The reputation of Michigan is incredible. If youâre from LI youâll have your whole life to enjoy NYC. It will always be there. MIchigan will stretch you in new ways, living in a different part of the country. Be boldâgo to Michigan.

Well said, Endicott.

I agree. For the âreal college experience,â Michigan all the way.

Also, why drive to Michigan once youâve brought your stuff out there? Fly or take the train.

I die to live in NYC. Even so, I choose Michigan over NYU.

Nyu!!!

Both are great schools. What do you plan to study, what do you plan to do after undergraduate years? What are your interest, what are you looking for as part of your college experience etc These are things one could use to help guide you to the best fit university.

UMich, not even close in my oppinion.

UMich is the classic college experience, while NYU is more of an urban experience with classes. I concur with Endicott.

My friendâs brother attended âThe Hill Schoolâ in PA got deferred then rejected by Umich who ended up in NYU. There is also a Huge gap in terms of PA score between the two, so, I would conclude that Michigan >>> NYU!!

After learning about Gratz v. Bollinger and Grutter v. Bollinger, I find it difficult to respect Michigan.

Tough call, with Michigan costing ~45k and NYU costing ~45k (sans Room/Board).

I would be livid to have to pay twice the amount in-state residents pay on top of feeling like an alienated outsider, being a geographical minority.

Michigan Literature/Science/Arts isnât exactly Berkeley EECS to justify that sort of treatment.

On the other hand, you will not get the traditional college experience at NYU. And, it will be difficult for you to find your niche, especially if you donât dorm and given the nature of city life. It will be hard, but much more possible, for you to feel comfortable at Michigan.

Although, in my opinion, NYU is better than Michigan in many respects (Law, Medicine, Business), Michigan is the better choice for you.

I currently attend NYU, and I am transferring to Michigan next year, due to changes in my program. What are you studying?
For me, Michigan will cost roughly 15k less per year. Room and board, is ridiculously priced here, and if you donât get a scholarship, COA is roughly 60k per year, not 45k.

I would take michigan! (:

Itâs hard not to respect a university where over 70% of its programs are ranked in the top 10. It being a PUBLIC school in the MIDWEST makes it even more impressive and unique. Because youâve got to attract top professors and researchers to want to live there, it really says a lot about the desirability of Ann Arbor.

They are vastly different places in virtually every respect. NYU for studying film or theater and being in the city; UM for campus strolls, Big 10 sports. Trust your own vibe

^yabeyabe2, and even then for theater, it would depend on what the individual is looking for in a theater program.
Both NYU and Michigan have extremely respected Theater and Musical Theater Majors. They both produce wildly successful alumni. They just go about training their students in different ways.

While these are certainly peers in the academic world and their ability to place you into the world of Wall Street, they are very different environments. Personally, I canât imagine wanting to spend my college years on a non-campus like NYU, but to each his own. But if you are looking for a more traditional college experience, U Michigan is the very clear choice.

tough call. if u have the means, i would say visit both.
