Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan

The BFA in MT at Oakland is not discussed very much here, and admittedly, I don’t know a lot about it. However, an actor friend who has been earning a living across North America and in Europe in MT/theatre/cabaret for more than 20 years spent three days at Oakland over the weekend, working with students and performing as well. She has done this a few times there and is always extremely impressed with the students, this time was no exception. One thing that she was very happy to see is that there is a course in caberet performance, which is one of her favorite forms of work, and one that she excels in. It’s the type of skill set that is a bonus to MT grads who will have to develop and produce their own work if they want to be successful. I found it interesting that Oakland offers a course specific to that art form. I’m not sure how many other schools have a similar course.

Just thought I’d mention Oakland since prospectives are often looking for additional, possible hidden gems, that may be available.

We live 15 minutes from Oakland’s campus - attend almost all of their student shows - of which the quality continues to climb - and know several past and present students! It is a program that should get more mention here. Their last audition date this spring was last weekend - but in the past they have held an August audition.

My husband and I are actually both Oakland Alum’s (Engineering and English) - for our D, it was a victim of “too close to home” syndrome.
