Obama Presidential Library at UChicago?

I don't think there has been much discussion here on CC about the fact that the Obama Presidential Library may end up at UChicago. But certainly the mainstream media has been discussing this and recently even some slight opposition has emerged from at least one faculty member. They say the decision about Obama's library location won't be made until after the election, but you will definitely be hearing more about this in the next year or two. If it's located at UChicago it would probably end up being a tourist attraction and, Lipson fears, the most high-profile place on campus.

In the fight for the Barack Obama Presidential Library and Museum, Obama's birth city of Honolulu is nudging ahead of his adopted home of Chicago.

Officials close to the selection process say that Honolulu and the University of Hawaii have stepped up their bid for what is could be the biggest and most high-tech of all the 14 libraries in the system, should he win a second term.

The University of Chicago is embroiled in a campus-wide debate regarding whether or not to bring Barack Obama’s presidential library to its campus. Though the president was once a senior law lecturer at U. of C., the dispute is causing a divide among the faculty.

Hawaii’s not gonna happen. Presidential libraries, without exception, are located

1) In the state from which the President in question launched his political career (eg, Reagan in California)

2) In the President’s birth state if the President held no elective office prior to the presidency (eg, Eisenhower in Kansas).

There would be no precedent for Obama choosing Hawaii. In fact, such a choice would be weird.

Having said this, I’d be surprised if it went to UChicago, either. Neither UChicago nor Obama need the connection, so what would be the point?

I think South Side Chicago–possibly Hyde Park–is quite likely, though.
