To clarify, my comments were in reference to the formal part of the audition; everyone was very friendly (albeit somewhat disorganized) for the rest of the process.

Interesting. We found it to be rather well organized and unfailingly warm and encouraging throughout the process, but the jazz auditions have a somewhat different format than the classical auditions from what I have heard.

This is my first post. I've been content to just read all of the wonderful suggestions and comments. My D had a regional audition (voice) in DC on 1/30. She just received an email about taking an online music theory test prior to 3/4. Can I take this as a positive sign that she may still be considered for an on-campus audition??? (Sounds like there will be lots of activity at the Conservatory on 3/10.)
Thanks.

Welcome to the fray, ebkinney1.

I think that is a pretty good indication that your daughter is still in the running. After all, why bother with the theory test if she had already been rejected? I know a couple of students who were not invited for live auditions in prior years and they only got a letter expressing regrets that the school could not hear all of the fine singers who apply, with no mention of a theory test. Your daughter should be hearing one way or the other very soon. Best wishes to her on getting invited and then turning in a great audition.

As B10 points out, they wind up testing the incoming class again over the summer and during orientation week. They use a series of progressively-harder tests to determine whether a student gets an extra hour per week of theory in first semester, gets placed into one of the normal first-semester theory sections, or tests out of one or more semesters worth.

Hey, I'm a current senior in high school who auditioned for oberlin this year at a regional site as well. Unless you've been told otherwise, I believe regional auditions are supposed to take the place of an on-campus audition for those who live too far away from oberlin to come in person. The on campus auditions are by invite only after sending in a prescreening cd. Since you auditioned at a regional site, you don't have to worry about being invited to audition at campus since a regional audition takes the place of an on-campus one.
I also have recieved the email regarding an online music theory test, as have two other students I know that are auditioning for oberlin. The email says that the test is part of the audition/application evaluation process and will serve as a placement exam for music theory should you be accepted and decide to enroll. So it is possible that it could just be something they send to all applicants who haven't been rejected by early decision. From what I know, I don't think that any letters (for regular decision) get sent until march so it could be a mass email, BUT...I definitely hope not.
Um, one last note. At my regional audition, the admissions woman told me that the theory and sight reading tests didn't really count for admision. So I don't know how much this test is worth in terms of admissions, but I

D auditioned at Oberlin on 2/10. According to the Director of Admissions, the on-line theory test is something new this year; they're using it instead of administering a theory test during the audition day itself.

D liked Oberlin much more than she expected to (she was concerned about the small town). Everyone there was very nice and welcoming. The Friday afternoon sessions were well worth going to, especially the string department meeting. The head of the department talked about the reasons why Oberlin might (or might not) be a good fit for each student. We skipped the reception, just because there were about 200 people trying to get into a space meant to hold 80.

The audition itself was in a large studio in front of two of the violin faculty. It was taped so that the missing faculty members could hear it. (Most of D's auditions have been either audio or video taped, which she wasn't expecting and found a little disconcerting).

Audition Times for March 10

Oberlin advised that audition times for Sat. March 10 could be ascertained by calling the conservatory admissions office on Wednesday March 7th.

I hope to see some of you at Oberlin on the 10th. Good luck to all!

Does anyone know the time limit for the timed online theory test for Oberlin Conservatory applicants?

it is one hour long

Thanks. It helps to know how much time to alot.

Very true... before you take the test, they do tell you that you have 60 minutes and they even give you a breakdown of how many minutes you SHOULD spend on each section. Good luck!
