Hi guys I'm relatively new to this site and I have essentially used it for college information and not for posting. I just finished my freshman year and I have been accepted to Oberlin and Hamilton for Fall 2011 as a transfer student. Both are LAC's, and both will cost about the same for me. The only plus for staying at my current school is low cost.

The reason I applied to these school's is their writing programs; both of them are pretty respectable. The only difference I see right away between the programs is Oberlin requires it's students to apply to every creative writing course, which can be both a positive and a negative in my opinion.

Anyways, if anybody knows much about either of the two schools, or both, it would be great if you could give me some feedback. Thanks.

Well I’m specifically interested in English/Writing, and possibly also in anthropology or sociology. Anything relating to those area’s would be helpful.

Exactly how liberal/hipster is Oberlin? How conservative is Hamilton? Does the conservatory at Oberlin dominate the atmosphere? Do you think either one has an edge academically, either in the areas I mentioned, or just in general? How does 4-1-4 work? Are people more prone to an occupation in the arts vs an occupation in business after graduating from either of these schools? I could probably think of some other questions but those are the ones bouncing around my head at the moment.

Hamilton and Oberlin are both great schools. Academically they are very similar, but most would agree that overall Hamilton has the edge. Hamilton is not ultra conservative. It has an ecliptic mix of people (I live like an hour away and have a few friends that go there). It has kind of nerdy, but fun people. Very smart and they are known for their general writing programs. Oberlin is very hipster, from what I know from friends who go there. People are very liberal, and often people call it a very ‘experimental’ college in all different forms. I’m not sure about the writing programs, but check out sites such as ************** and ***** to get a better feel/read reviews and such!

Hamilton’s sweet. Everyone I know who goes there likes it a whole lot and there’s a very ECLECTIC (ecliptic is an astronomy term) mix of people. It’s in a tiny town but they do a pretty good job making up for it with a lot of on-campus activities, musical acts, etc. What I’ve heard about Oberlin is that the people that like it there LOVE it, but the attitudes and type of crowd can estrange some people. Hamilton’s safer; Oberlin has a higher risk, but a higher reward. But this is all based on hearsay.

Not to be a jackass, but if you want to write, then perhaps get apostrophe rules straight: “school’s” and “area’s” are plurals, not possessives, so there’s no apostrophe.

Not to be a jackass, but don’t post on this forum just to correct another poster’s grammar, but since we’re correcting grammar, “what I’ve heard about Oberlin is that the people that like it there LOVE it” doesn’t make any sense.

i’m a transfer applicant to hamilton college, and i just stumbled across your comments under the ‘oberlin vs. hamilton’ post here on college confidential.

i was just wondering if you might send me your stats (not to be creepy)? i was accepted into another school a few days ago, but would love to know if i have a chance at hamilton :).
