Hi everyone! I got into both Oberlin and Middlebury and am having a hard time choosing between the two. They both gave me equal financial aid which makes the debacle even more difficult!
I want to double major in Computer Science and Political Science with the hope of starting a non-profit in the future. I am a very musically inclined person ( I play 4 instruments and sing) but I also love nature(hiking, yoga etc…) I can also speak like 5 languages. Given this information, I was wondering what your opinions would be on where I would fit in.
Thanks so much for all of yall’s help!
Where do you live and will travel be a financial burden?
@NEPatsGirl I’m from Houston so travel is about the same–
I dunno whichever you decide you like better.
FWIW your description sounds like Oberlin to me.
Though it’s easier to hike at Middlebury.
Have you visited both? They are so radically different in terms of student body and feel. Middlebury leans toward preppy New England while Oberlin leans bohemian. I can understand your feeling torn related to your interests, but it is likely you will have a remarkably more enjoyable four years at one than the other based on fit.
Believe it or not, it may be easier for you to find music lessons, groups, etc. at Midd. The serious musicians at Oberlin are in the conservatory. It’s not impossible to join musical groups at Oberlin (my son has done some musical theatre there), but because of the conservatory, there is less energy for that at the college.
OTOH, Oberlin is great for entrepreneurial types, and many students have a serious commitment to non-profits.
There is always music in Oberlin, whether in Con, or in college. What my D did not know until she enrolled was that Oberlin encourages entrepreneurship. Oberlin has Oberlin College Finance & Investment Club, a student run investment club that manages approximately $300,000. ( http://www.oberlinfinanceandinvestment.org/ ) Oberlin also has Creativity and Leadership program in which Oberlin business alumni mentor current Oberlin students (for-profit or non-profit.) It funded $37,000 just last month to several business ventures (first-year student to graduates.) ( http://new.oberlin.edu/office/creativity/index.dot ) ( http://new.oberlin.edu/office/creativity/funding-opportunities/launchu/ ) There is also a very exciting winter term in which selected business scholars visit various cities networking with Oberlin business alumni.
