oberlin vs wesleyan

Would love to know how different life at oberlin is from life at wesleyan. if wesleyan is your dream school (film your main interest), would oberlin be a good match?

Oberlin and Wesleyan get a lot of cross-applicants.

any thoughts on how oberlin might compare? academically and socially?

sorry…ignore this…

There are probably more similarities than differences academically and socially. Wesleyan tends to draw more of New England crowd because of its location but New York and California are well-represented at both schools. Both are progressive schools with free-thinking, activist students, great professors, mediocre athletics, and decent towns. Wesleyan’s film program is highly respected; not sure about Oberlin’s.

I’ll disagree about the athletics at Wesleyan being mediocre (though 10+ years ago they were indeed mediocre)… and I think with it being a NESCAC school, Wes will have a larger athletic presence on campus. As others have mentioned, there is significant overlap with the vibe of the schools and Oberlin would indeed be a good match.

Oberlin would probably be a very good match, though Wesleyan is better-known for film studies. This depends on you as a student, and we’d need more info. Oberlin is a great place to explore your creativity and pursuits in general, and not just for film. Wesleyan does offer some graduate programs that Oberlin does not, so there may be more advanced research opportunities in film / aesthetics / other avenues. If you are speaking of dream schools, presumably you haven’t applied yet. I’d suggest applying to both, and if you gain admission, visit each.
