I'm a junior in HS, and I'm going to play oboe in the school band my senior year. I've played alto sax since 5th grade, so I have some background, but I'm still not anywhere close to being able to play well enough for band. My goal is to be good enough for a college orchestra, since saxophones usually don't find a way into orchestra music.

I'm using the school's only oboe, and it's not very good. It's not horrible, and it plays, but it could be improved. My teacher has helped me a little with adjusting the reed and embouchure, but she basically said she won't be much help, since she only learned oboe for college. She recommended I take lessons.

Does anyone here play oboe in a band or orchestra? I'm probably trying to learn too quickly, since I kind of thought I'd learn in a couple weeks. I now see that such an accomplishment isn't really possible. I just need some general tips on how to play, like experiences others have had learning the oboe. The book doesn't say everything about learning an instrument.

I'm still on the "dying duck" level of playing.
