Obtaining a job at a big time hardware manufacturer

I'm going to school for ECE, and if all works out and goes well, as it should, I want to go for my masters in ECE. My question is if I wanted to get a job at some big hardware vendor, say AMD, Radeon, Intel, Nvidea, or any company like those; what would I have to do to obtain a job with them? What do they look for hiring people, do they typically only hire from colleges/universities around them? Do I need a PhD in ECE, if I want to work on the development of new computer hardware/technologies? Development is what I want to essentially do, and I am thinking this entails a PhD but everyone tells me PhD is only good for academia.

I'm pretty confused...

You know, you can go to their web sites and click on the “jobs” or “careers” links.

Many people work in industry jobs with bachelor’s degrees.
