How can I get my parents tax information? Im a 20 year old that did one of those "live independently for two years" things to get residency in another state and would like to attend college part time starting next year. Thing is being independent out of high school doesn't make you independent for FAFSA as I discovered. I would appreciate getting a 3,000 dollar stafford to be able to attend my community college. Me and my step-dad aren't on good terms and he is the guy that handles all the taxes in my family. He is unwilling to give tax and income information to me and thats preventing me from completing my FAFSA. I figure he might be hiding something from the IRS but I don't know. Either way, can I get a lawyer or the IRS to give income information to me? I'd really like to be able to fill out this FAFSA form.

There is a new deal where if your parents sign a form saying they refuse to provide data for FAFSA you can complete it without them and will be eligible for unsubsidized loans. You will not be eligible for other FA such as grants. You would need to talk to the school about how to go about this.
