Oceanography

D just finished her junior year and we are compiling a list of colleges with her that offer her intended major: Oceanography/Marine Sciences. One of the schools that she has shown an interest in is LSU, but further research shows very low 4, 5 & 6yr. graduation rates. I also read this morning on their website news releases about extensive budget cuts. Can anyone comment on the low grad rates? I'm also worried that some of their programs may disappear.

I am somewhat familiar with the college (took a few classes years ago) but not sure about the graduation rate. I would contact them - [Coastal Sciences Environment (CES) Home](http://www.sce.lsu.edu/undergraduate/) - with your questions and concerns.

Budget cuts are a way of life for Lousiana higher education. I can only speculate on how this will effect certain programs. That’s a good question for SC&E.

Graduation rates depend more on the students than the schools. Any student who wants to can graduate on time. They just have to put forth the right effort. Having said that, LSU is making a concerted effort to improve the graduation rates. They offer all sorts of help for students.
As for programs disappearing, every college everywhere is suffering from the current economy.
