Does anyone have any experience with taking ochem lab 143a? There are 2 teachers teaching, Weizman and Ternansky. From what ive heard, people say Ternansky has no lab reports, so your grade is based entirely on the midterms and final (does this mean his exams are reallyyy hard?). For Weizman, I heard lab reports are necessary, and the exams are tricky. Has anyone taken any of these classes and would like to share their opinion? Thank you!

Since it’s a lab class, you’ll have minimal contact with the professor (lecture 1x/week). Your grade in the lab will largely be determined by your TA’s evaluation of your effort and work.

So even though the choice of professor doesn’t matter, go with Ternansky. I hated ochem and sucked at it before taking his 143B/C lab classes, but somehow overcame that and went on to happily take a handful of grad-level ochem courses. Ternansky’s very skilled at teaching, emphasizing the big picture, and while it may be a teensy bit more thought-provoking than Weizman’s class (I took two of his classes as well), you’ll come out further ahead.

PS - there’s no way a lab class is based purely on exams.

astrina, is it possible to fail the exams, do good on the reports, and pass the lab classes?

Well, a D+ is still a passing grade … so yes. But if you’re dead set on failing a class you haven’t taken, maybe you should consider another major?

NB: my college roommate was a chem major until she took 143B. she took it, got a C, and transferred to psychology. and this was a girl who got a 5 on the AP and took honors ochem her freshman year.
