DD is thinking about taking OChem this summer. She is currently a freshman. Please give me your thoughts on the pros and cons. It is a 4 week couse.

Ochem has way too much material to be covered in only 4 weeks.

Cons: Interferes with using summer for EC’s. Cons: Too short to learn the material well. Cons: Med School adcoms tend to disrespect summer courses, although this is a fairly small effect if it’s done at the home school.

4 weeks seems to be too short. Are you sure it covers a year worth of matrial (2 smesters)?

The 4 week course only covers OChem 1. It would be taken at her home school. Thanks for all of the advice so far.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Ochem is HARD HARD HARD. Take it at the normal time, with the normal amount of time to study. You don’t want to do anything at all to make that class harder than it already is. And my D found ochem 2 even harder, so you need as strong an experience as possible in ochem 1. The ochem sequence was the worst part of her undergrad experience. It is not something to mess around with.

My daughter took both sessions of OChem at her home school over the summer. It was extremely intense but she was glad that she did it this way. She was able to focus on OChem and not any other courses which worked out well for her. Dare I say that she actually enjoyed it?

If you take Ochem in 4 weeks you are not allowed to miss even one class without getting dropped by the prof, depending how strict the prof chooses to be.
