My school has a summer course where i can complete the entire ochem series in an accelerated 9 week program. By doing so, i can start my upper div classes my sophmore year. Is it recommendable if im trying to go to med school? My friend told me med school look down upon stuff like this. waht do u guys think?

Why would you want to learn all of ochem in 9 weeks?

so that instead of spenidng 3 quarters on it, i can wfinish it in 9 weeks and start my upper div classes earlier. i see a lot of downside to this but yet its still sound so tempting. so i need some opinions!

If you're smart and you think you'll do well in it then go for it. Medschool care about your grades so you would have to do quite well in the program. I personally wouldn't recommend it because I find ochem hard enough already in the regular quarter. There's a lot of material in ochem to memorize, and not only do you need to know the material at the back of your hand, you also need to know how to apply it.

1.) Summer courses are reputedly graded on easier curves. Medical schools may or may not recognize this and penalize you for it. My advisor didn't seem to think they did; PhillySAS's advisor thinks they do; both advisors are among the best in the country.

2.) OChem does show up on the MCAT. It might be harder to learn in a short sequence.

3.) Summer courses interfere with more important summer priorities: research, travel, community service, patient care experience.

I don't recommend this. Ochem is a lot of memorization of reactions and such, and it will be very tough to retain that information in such a short time frame. Just take it during the year.

I talked to some med students and they say taking 1 or 2 science course over the summer is fine
