October 2010 Math SAT Thread

Good luck tomorrow everyone! Discussions will take place here tomorrow after the test

Question:

There are 8 basketball teams in a tournament. Each team played against all other teams 4 times each. How many games were played?

I got 112, but the answer is apparently 128.

Each team plays 8 teams x 4 games=32 games . Eight teams playing 32 games each makes for a total of 256 games. However, this number does not take into account the fact that each game is between two teams. Therefore, the total number of games played is really half because you need to divide by two. (256/2= 128)

I don’t get where you’re coming from mcshelvy.

12 21 31 41 51 61 71 81
13 23 32 42 52 62 72 82
14 24 34 43 53 63 73 83
15 25 35 44 54 64 74 84
16 26 36 45 55 65 75 85
17 27 37 46 56 67 76 86
18 28 38 47 57 68 78 87

I made a table of outcomes for teams playing with other teams. They do not play with themselves, so I omitted it.

Each can only play with 7 other teams and it says they play with the same teams four times. 7 x 4 = 28.

28 x 8 = 224/2 = 112.

Ryan, did the answer 128 come from a reliable source? I keep doing the problem every way I can think of and I still get 112. D:

its a q from kaplan 12 and i got the same answer. guess the key is wrong.

I think we’re still not allowed to discuss here.

You guys are discussing the test content in far too much detail, in violation of the embargo.

Silverturtle is absolutely right, you are violating the embargo, you can discuss at least 4 to 6 days from now. By the way Math was, indeed, easy.

By the way, no one can claim anything about the difficulty level of the test, unless the results are out. Including me, of course.

ah bloddy hell. I got one question wrong because my mind suddenly went blank even though I’d practiced it a 10938 times before…grr… what would minus 1 be in this curve?? a 760? oh man. :(

I don’t know math was easy or not. Just freaked out at wr and cr, so I just did math basically on my instinct. Haha, hope i can trust it this time :D

what do you think one wrong and one omit would be for this test?

did anyone take it? how did you think of it?

can we talk about the questions…

Was the second to last grid in 2 or 4? I remember the last 5 grid in questions:

14)24
15) 8
16) Had to be a number between 10-14. I wrote 11.
17) 2 or 4. A lot of people got either 2 or they got 4…
18) 290

Also, what would one blank, one gridin, and one MC wrong yeild? 730?

what was the question to number 17?

I’m not sure, people seem to think it was “easy” so i know 3 wrong would be a 730 AT BEST but idk about 1 wrong and 2 omit. usually curves are less forgiving for easy tests

i can’t remember if i put 2 or 4 for it…i think i put 2

what was the B R G Y pattern. was it 117???

I got 119 for that.

It was 119.
