***October 2015 SAT (US Only) Thread***

Any essay writing tips? I’m really confident that if I start off with a good essay on Saturday I’ll really do well on the test.

I’m really worried about the Writing portion. By my third practice test, I was consistently missing 0-1 problems, but now that I am on my 20-something practice test, I am missing 3-4 questions. Don’t know what’s going on. Please help explain these.
20. The reason the mammal is (a. the dominant) life form in (b. such a) wide range of habitats is (c. its) ability to maintain a steady internal body temperature in (d. practically any) environment. (e. no error)
The correct answer is “e”, but I thought “the reason” must be followed by “is that”. Simplified, the sentence says, “The reason is its ability…” which sounds awkward imo.
26. Before the election, there was a (a. long period of) disagreement among my (b. friends and I), (c. because we) all had conflicting opinions (d. from which) we would not be swayed. (e. no error)
I was torn between b (correct) and c, but I settled on c because I thought “because” could never be preceded by a comma.
34. In context, which of the following is the best way to revise and combine sentences 13 and 14 (reproduced below)?
It is that organic food is better for the environment. The reason for this is that farms that grow organic food use less energy and leave soils in better condition than on conventional farms.
My answer: “Because organic farms used less energy and left soils in better condition than conventional farms did, organic food was better for the environment.”
Correct answer: “Organic food is better for the environment because organic farms use less energy than conventional ones and leave soils in better condition.”
Reasoning: I thought the former was wrong because the rest of the passage was written in present tense and I thought the latter was wrong because I thought it should be “organic farms use less energy and leave soils in better condition than do conventional ones”

Yeah, your answers are all incorrect. Are you a native speaker? Just playing these by ear, they make sense to me.

@Smargent Yes, I am native. The questions I just posted were medium difficulty, but I got 15/15 on hard questions. I now see that #20 was just a silly mistake but I still don’t understand the correct answers of the other two. My answers to #26 and #34 sounded incorrect when I selected them, but none sounded better. Must just be a brain fart (very tired from schoolwork), could you please explain grammatically why the correct answers were correct?

What are you guys doing to get “into the mode” like the night before? Not specifically studying because it’s basically too late for that, I mean more like sleeping early, not eating too much, etc.

Hello everyone! Do you have any tips for my unique situation…?
I am taking the SAT for the third time on Saturday. My first score was a 1600, second score: 1780, and I’m aiming for a 2000. The only studying I’ve done this week so far is taking 2 tests on Saturday and Sunday, and reviewing Direct Hits & Barrons CR SAT Vocab. Do you have any recommendations on what I should do tonight/tomorrow (specifically for math)? I was going to increase my essay score (10) with Academic Hackers tips, take one section of each to review, look over the Erica Metlzer’s Writing book, and study more vocab.

is the U.S version different from the international version?

It’s a different test, but the same difficulty/material/etc. @stewartplum

oh kk

after the test plz post which side u chose in the essay

ok when u finish we can discuss here

On my last practice test, I got a new best score: 2390 (-2 Critical Reading, assuming 10 essay). I feel I know the content pretty well, but I’m really nervous that I won’t be able to break even 2250 on the test because I always get distracted and go slower when I hear everyone else around me writing. Hope I don’t have any such difficulties on test day.

So nervous about the test tomorrow! Good luck everyone .
