Anyone else doing really badly at reading and science? I’ve only taken the SAT before and I gasp always had time to review my answers a bit. I’ve done one practice test (1572CPRE) and got 29 composite - 34E, 32M, 28R, 23S. I randomly guessed on 10 questions each for reading and science and missed 6 math questions (though I’d only missed one, and I’m usually good at math, so I’m annoyed at that).
I need at least 33 composite for my score to be of any use. I’m only taking the ACT in an effort to get better than my 1450 redesigned SAT (760M/690ERW) and 1980 old SAT (730M/720R/620W) for scholarship purposes. I always do worse on reading than everything else in MC exams, but hopefully I can get 35E/35M/31R/31S. FYI I’m a junior but I’m graduating a year early.
Try a different strategy. Do the passages in the order you want; not the order presented. If one of the passages has several questions that have specific line citations, do it first. Skip reading the passage and go straight to the questions. Answer the questions with specific line citations first. By the time you’ve answered those, you should have an idea of the layout of the passage to help you answer the other questions. If a passage doesn’t have many line citation questions, lightly skim the passage just to get a map of what each paragraph covers, so you can go to the questions and find the answers quickly.
All of the answers must be supported in the text of the passage. Do not base answers on info you already know that is not supported in the text. Only make small inferences. If you are needing to make a giant leap beyond what the text supports to make an answer work – that’s the wrong answer.
Keep practicing. You’ll get better. Try what strategies work for you and use them. If you continue to take practice tests using the same strategy you are using now, you’ll likely see similar results. The Reading and Science tests boil down to time management.
@SDMom2019 I basically did that the first time when I got 28R, and I ran out of time because I kept accidentally mixing up the bubbling. 2nd time I tried fully reading the passages and then answering questions - I got everything answered, but got 14 questions wrong. This last time, I read the questions, and answered them out of order as I skimmed. It seems to work better.
Just got 27S (only practiced science so far today) - I didn’t bother reading the studies (only read the parts that were necessary) and got 8 wrong. 5 of them, however, were because I didn’t pay enough attention to graph axes, so I’ll be sure to do that in the future!
YES MANY PEOPLE KNOW IT SO DO NOT HOLD ON TO THE BELIEF THAT YOU WILL HAVE HIGH SCORE. THE CURVE WILL BE VERY STRICT SO ACT RIGHT NOW. EVEN IF YOU HAVE MANY RIGHT ANSWERS IT WILL BE MEANINGLESS COMPARED TO HUNDREDS OF PERFECT ANSWERS.
@HungXuan Bro, I’m from Egypt and got A07 form.I thought all international students get the same form? How do you think this happened and is it gonna affect all test takers for 28 oct?
Ran out of time on the math section again but I was bit more accurate this time around. Did anyone else find the science section’s ‘Conflicting Viewpoints’ passage challenging?
I can’t remember my test form honestly. I’m too annoyed… the proctor called the math section 15 minutes early! I’m fast at math, but I hadn’t answered 6 questions and this is the last date for the scholarship I’m trying for.
Reading was normal (I think I got anywhere between 27 and 36 - answered everything), science was a bit harder (also answered everything - probably 29-36), grammar was much harder than in practice tests (so probably 31-33). Ugh.
does anyone remember seeing an error in the answer choices of one of those English section grammar questions that ask you to correct part of a sentence? like how one of the choices should have had a comma before “but” or “and” (it was some coordinating conjunction) because the sentence had 2 independent clauses, but it didn’t have a comma? so none of the choices seemed to work? or maybe i’m wrong lol
HOLY FACC. MY PROCTOR DID THE EXACT SAME THING IN THE MATH. I had to guess on 17 questions!! I usually answer like 50 questions in the math, so there goes my score
@imapirate99 I would have guessed on my 6 if I’d had time, at least you got to guess on 17! Many of the last answers were A/F and E/K so if you guessed those sometimes you’re probably at a similar score. Normally I can get 58 questions in math right…
@MagisLudi The math questions I did before my proctor called time 15 min early were very easy. But I also am halfway through the undergraduate math curriculum so I’m probably biased.
