If you are a strong dancer, and have not gotten the MT acceptance you want yet and are looking to add a late audition, you might want to consider the OCU (Oklahoma City University) Dance Performance Major. It is a completely separate audition from MT or Acting. The Major itself has produced countless working actors in all types of roles on Broadway, in national tours and in top regional shows. . And the Anne Lacey dance school is consistently rated in the top, if not considered the top, dance school in the country for aspiring MT performers. They have a last on campus audition March 22-23 in OKC. You must register by March 10. There is an optional singing audition as part of this audition for those who wish to sing.
Dance majors can audition for and are often cast in OCU shows with MTs and actors. You can take voice with adjunct faculty. They also have an entertainment business track among other things
Just thought I’d mention it for anyone seeking additional audition opportunities. Not for all, but if you are a strong dancer, worthy of consideration.
thanks @vvnstar This program is on my D’s list, but the travel expense involved in flying to OK/ 3 nights in a hotel to attend the audition is a big factor. Could you give me a bit of an idea about how strong a dancer is required? I see the program offers 10 levels of instruction, do they accept kids that are experienced/strong in tap and jazz, (w/ choreography credits), but would consider themselves intermediate ballet dancers? Also, do you know how many students they take? thanks for sharing your insight! This program sounds like it could be a great fit for my D!
@sladdymtmom There is an option to submit a video if travel is cost prohibitive The requirements for the video may help give you an idea of what minimum level they are looking for in each discipline. I am sure that most dancers in the program have one type of dance in which they are stronger than others. That is one of the nice things about leveling each semester and having so many different levels to choose from. You don’t have to be the same level in all disciplines.
Here are the video requirements which may shed light on what basic skills you would be expected to have:
Ballet:
Adage placement combination showing balance and extension
Pirouettes
A line of turns of the dancer’s choice, i.e. chaines
Small jumps
Large jumps
Jumps with beats, if possible
Jazz:
Inside and outside jazz turns
A battement & jump combination using different levels, i.e. jumps in the air with floor work in between
A short dance combination showing dynamics, energy, stamina, and the ability to hit pose
Tap:
A series of basic rhythm steps, i.e. flaps, shuffles, cramprolls, drawbacks, irish
Time step and a time step break
Simple to complex riffs
Pullbacks or pick-ups; wings
A turn series, i.e. irish, flap ball change, maxi-fords, cramprolls
Personal Presentation: With camera zoomed in so that face and upper chest are in the picture, introduce yourself, and talk several minutes about yourself and your interests and goals in both the short and long term.
Performance: Present a minute performance in the style or styles of your choice. Remember we are a “show business” oriented program, so show lots of personality and pizzazz!
I do not know how many they take each year. My D was MT (she has graduated ). But MTs and dance majors could and often do take class together. It just depended on what level everyone placed. They do limit class size. Dance majors get preference followed by MTs.
thanks so much @vvnstar great idea and very helpful! we’ll look these requirements over!
One note: I am not sure you can be considered for talent scholarships auditioning byvideo. You may wish to check. You can see any academic $ you are eligible for on the website. (Based on gpa and test scores). But I think you have to do an in-person audition to be considered for talent $. (Which is in addition to academic $)
yes, that’s correct!! thanks!
