We just got home from OCU…and as usual I was extremely impressed with the production of Seussical. We did not see the Thurs night performance as we flew in from out of town Friday afternoon. DD played Mayzie Friday night and we think she did very well. I was particularly impressed with the actors who played Horton, Gertrude, the Mayor and his wife, and both JoJo’s. But really, the whole show was cast very well by Dr Herendeen and ALL of the kids did such a great job…we really enjoyed it!!!

Also as usual, DD is very sad to have left all of her new and old friends…but its only 6 weeks and she will be back in OK and moving into the dorms!!! We are very happy that she will be studying at OCU this Fall. She said that she learned and grew so much in a mere three weeks that she can only imagine what the next four years will do!

i got home today from my first time to go to this program, and i could not have asked for anything better. for anyone who has doubts about going, or is considering it for the future, i wholeheartedly reccommend it. the faculty and counselors there are incredibly nice and helpful, especially Dr. Herendeen. we called him our “dad” the whole time because he was so compassionate towards us. you walk away having learned mountains of knowledge about being an actor, and you become a true family with the people there. it was tremendously hard to leave today, and i already miss my friends a lot, but i am so happy i did it. seriously, this has been one of the best experiences of my entire life.

it was the most amzing camp ever Seussical was so much fun, i got to play the General, it was a whole new experience helped make my acting more diverse! Dr. H was so inspiring and awesome. I will never forget anyhting about the camp andI cant wait to audition in November.

A parent posted something about girls should bring all of their dance shoes. My D is packing for Session 2 and can’t seem to locate her ballet slippers. Does anyone know if she would need these for dance classes? Also, any need to take her tap shoes? I only recall reading info about character and jazz shoes in the letter/messages from OCU.
Thanks!

well, really it’s only jazz shoes that are needed. Some people wore ballet shoes, but it is jazz class so I think they would prefer jazz shoes. I know I wore my jazz shoes with my costume, but I think there was one person who might have worn ballet slippers. I guess it wouldn’t hurt to bring them. And I would say bring tap shoes. There were beginner and advanced tap on the weekends. For beginner you don’t need them but for advance (which you have to have had 3 years of tap or more to take) you have to have them.

And I’d like to repeat what everyone has said already, that this camp was absolutely the best experience of my life. I learned so much and met the most amazing people in the world! I miss them all terribly, but we are already planning to meet up again at the November auditions. I feel so ready for college auditions now! I would recommend this camp to everyone!

High School MT Session 1 Parents/Students - Is it necessary to bring a laptop? My D is packing for Session 2 and was wondering whether she should bring her computer. Is the dorm wireless? Is there a computer lab available to the students if needed? Thanks!

Mom103: My D has attended the camp three years in a row and has never brought a computer. She went to the library when she wanted to use the computer (mostly for checking Facebook, I think which was not very often because there is not a lot of free time). So while probably nice to have…I would not say it is necessary.

TXKatsmom: Session II is going very well. The 104 degree weather was new to my “northerner” D, and that made me laugh. Class placements and auditions went very well. Suitemates are great. This is my D’s first time at OCU, and she is thrilled with the supportive, nurturing yet challenging faculty. What a nice combination. My D has also commented about how supportive the other “campers” are. That has not always been the case at other pre-college programs. I can’t speak for the other kids, but my D is very happy in Session II. Thanks for asking. Good luck to your D this fall!

My son is also at camp in Session II. Things seem to be going very well. I was told that he asked the camp director if they had to go home at the end of 3 weeks! Ha!

What other pre college camps have some of the other kids been to other than OCUs?

Also, I have heard that Princeton Review puts out a ranking of Musical Theater Schools but have not been able to locate one. Does anyone have a link to rankings?

We just found out yesterday that my D was accepted to the 1st summer MT session at OCU. Has anyone else applied/been accepted? We live in Hawaii so it will be a long trip but she is very excited. Information gained from this MT site has been invaluable in terms of selecting schools, audition prep, video requirements and general information that cannot be found anywhere else. Thanks to everyone that contributes to these threads.

Our D has also been been accepted for the Musical Theatre Program Session I - though we are coming from the East Coast. She is also very excited!

We would love to hear from past parents and participants what we might do between now and June to best help prepare for the program.

Also - what should we definitely bring to the program or leave at home.

Daughter attended Session I last year, and LOVED it. Prep? Keep doing what she’s doing – voice lessons, dance classes, acting…whatever. Another good thing for her to do is to work on her book of songs she’ll take with her. My kiddo always keeps hers in a binder w/those nonglare sleeves; last summer, OCU stated they preferred 2-sided or taped copies…with all the music dd “had” to have with her, we were doing some creative copying and taping. Shop now for a plain black cocktail dress – the kids wore those for cabarets, and you might be able to find one on clearance (as my kiddo hasn’t seen fit to wear hers since…black is not her usual thing!). Think about a song to audition with (they audition for the show when they arrive…a long, but fun day). If you’re flying to the program, as dd did, consider shipping ahead bedding, etc so you don’t have to lug it all on the plane… That’s about all I can think of right now, but be sure to PM or post questions. Congratulations to those attending…it’s a great program!

Mommafrog - Thank you for your reply. We are so excited and any information just makes it more fun.

It is helpful to know they prefer the music to be 2-sided or taped copies. One more question then - do they prefer it to still be put in a three ring binder or do they like it accordion-style?

If people are watching the Miss America pageant - they may see Susan Powell (Miss American 1981) who was vocally trained by Florence Birdwell of OCU!
