My D was in the bathroom brushing her teeth when she heard Susan Powell’s name from the TV. She came in all excited trying to tell me, with a toothbrush in her mouth, that Susan was a former Miss OCU. Of course I couldn’t understand her and thought she was saying someone was at the door! LOL

Larkmom – binder is okay, didn’t need to be accordianed (is that a word?) When at OCU, make sure that you have your kids show you the “Hall of Hair” near the theatre where they perform – there is an entire WALL of beauty queens with OCU as their school – including Kristen Chenoweth…and many, many others.

My daughter was accepted into the first summer session! She’s very excited! Thank you all for your posts about your feelings about the program . . . it helped knowing so many kids have had positive experiences.

Is anyone going to the 2nd MT session? Depending on what i get back from MPulse I might be going to that one…

This is my first posting. D heard today she’s in to the 1st session. Very excitedWondering whether anyone has compared OCU program to others. ALso wondering how many kids they take in each session. Thanks to all for the information.

I am definitely going to the second session, and I just made a facebook group for both sessions- just search OCU Summer Musical Theater 2010

Does anyone know if applying for financial aid for the program diminishes the chances of being accepted. As many universities encourage applying I wasn’t sure if applying would cause one not to be selected. TKS

A program like this is a cash cow. So applying for financial aid doesn’t HURT you, but NOT applying does HELP you. They do at least have the talent aspect involved, so not every untalented rich kid can get in.

my D, who will be a HS sr., just spoke with a friend who attended Session I 2011. This gal made All State Choir as a HS freshman and is no slouch. she said the camp was a “life changing experience” …said it is a true boot camp with very very few breaks (she won a lead role). “getting to know you” activities on Sat check-in day, then Sun auditions start. Placements for music theory + dance. 1 hour class each weekday morning of dance, music theater and acting technique. Master Classes Wed, Thurs and Fri. everyone gets at least one callback for the musical…parts announced Sun pm or Mon am. double cast leads. She was absolutely blown away at how hands-on Dr. H is…he’s there all the time. ALL instructors were OCU faculty, with help from MFA candidates. She took the college audition elective (sats are electives days) and said it was uber demanding to the point that she worked on her own in the private lesson rooms to get it up to par. Walker Dorm: boys on one floor; girls on the other. rooms taped shut from the outside each night at 11-- broken tape is a big no-no. everyone fell into bed at 11 pm so curfew was not an issue. She advised to take a laptop, healthy snacks, water bottle, all kinds of dance shoes and leotards, advil, throat spray and (for girls) 2-3 dressy dresses for the Master Classes (in addition to the black dress for the cabaret). Everyone gets black canvas bag at check-in to put notebook, change of clothes/shoes, phone, etc. in. Food OK…cafeteria busy (other camps going on at the same time). No Master Classes final week—rehearsing shifts to cabaret pieces + musical. Chorus has lots of repertoire to learn. Disappointed that there were only 40-60 attendees at each performance, but AMAZING talent on stage. Said the group was from all over the US— approx 1/3 from arts magnets. 10 guys +16 girls (Session I 2011). 54 in Session II. Floor counselors are all MFA candidates and are very helpful in keeping spirits up, allowing access to practice rooms. LOTS of work amazing bonding–everyone supports everyone–few Divas. Daughter’s friend said that, were someone to ask her today who her top 10 friends were, 9 would be her fellow OCU bootcampers whom she met for the first time in mid June.

Thank you so much for this information…it is definitely coming in handy as I am packing up my daughter for session 2 :)

nymom95 . . . I know that there is heat-wave in OKC right now, but last year my D had me send her rain boots because there was so much rain and flooding. There were a lot of low lying areas and so there was a great deal of trudging through deep puddles. So, just in case, I sent the rain boots in the box that we shipped early. :0)

(Just checked the month long forecast and it looks pretty dry - they probably would love some rain for relief.)

I would also suggest shower shoes as the showers sometimes drain really slowly. (blech)

And, by the way, my D loved the experience last year and is SO counting the hours until she leaves. :0) We should PM :0)

Thanks so much for the input. She is bringing shower shoes. Anything else “unusual” you can think to bring? Definitely PM me. Glad to hear that your daughter loved it so much and is attending again. My D is so excited…I am sure that she will love it!!!

More “unusual” things to bring . . . scotty12 mentioned the audition and master classes . . . last year I ended up sending my D a CD/iPod player and CDs with accompaniment tracks on them so that she could rehearse for those classes as well as for the cabarets. If I recall correctly, I think there were two “student only” cabarets last year and the final one in front of all of the families. They do have practice rooms, but my D does not play piano well enough to accompany herself. I know that they discourage folks from bringing electronics, but the player was seriously $25. I pre-sent it this year as well.

Last year I ended up sending her more sheet music too. Between the classes, cabarets and just having friends and roommates that sing all the time, she felt like she needed more music to pick from.

Hope that helps. If I think of anything else, I’ll post. I’m sending you a PM regarding another tip. :0)

Now that the kids are in Session 2 for MT at OCU, I would love to hear info from parents that are getting updated on what’s happening
I’m a new parent to this kind of camp and any information is appreciated! Thanks

Spoke to my D briefly today. She is loving it!!! She was just finished with lunch and she was going to the bookstore with some friends to buy some OCU merchandise. She said that her classes this morning were good and that they were having their first music rehearsal at 2:00. The show has been cast and she is excited about it all. She loves the food and the dorms are fine.

Thanks for your post (nymom94) I’ve only gotten a couple of texts so I’m interested in whatever I can hear about the camp.

Princessjojo - sent you a PM. :0)

Last night my D texted me and said that she is having a great time. She said that all of the kids get along so well and are very supportive of eachother and that it was like a big family. I asked her if she liked the OCU campus and she responded, “I love it here!” She said the days are very long and tiring. She also said that they had a downpour today and that she had to walk through it.

These posts bring a smile to my face as I remember my D’s similar experiences. She attended three summers in a row and LOVED each and every one of them. So happy your children are having such a wonderful time!

Just curious…how many kids are accepted/attend the summer MT program at OCU?
