tltl: I tried to send you a private message but your message box is full!

Perhaps anne1244 is correct that the Cabaret "definitely isn't the time to ask for individual critiques," but if I recall, it was after the "Les Miserables" performance that my husband and I introduced ourselves to Dr Herendeen to thank him for such a wonderful show and for taking such good care of our daughter and the other kids for three weeks. It was at that time that he offered such information about our D without our even asking. I just meant that if the opportunity presented itself and it seemed appropriate, perhaps
4MTDTR could get some information, but anne1244 is definitely right in bringing this up.

Anne, I'm excited for your D to be going to BTP. She should have a fabulous experience! Hope you can give updates on the summer program thread.

My daughter is attending session two, does anyone know if they are required to bring monologues?

My daughter is attending OCU for the first time - session 2. She will be flying in. Her father is escorting her, as she's never travelled alone. They won't have a car. Is there a store within walking distance of Cokesbury, where they can purchase toilet tissue, paper towels, trash bags and a case of water bottles before he leaves her off? I'd hate to waste precious suitcase space for those types of things. Also, do they videotape either of the shows (cabaret/Sweeney Todd) to sell to parents? What about photographs?

marval85, they are not required to bring monologues (I wish they would work on that more!!!!).

KM123, They do tape both shows and I can't remember if we had to pay for them or not. They asked us which night we preferred and they sent the DVD shortly after the session ended. Last year there were no photographs for sale.

I really don't remember if there was a store within walking distance, I'll ask my D next time I talk to her.

There is a Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market a few blocks west on 23rd Street. My D says to walk there in the daytime and with other people. There is a store in between Cokes and WM that my D describes as "sketchy." I think it is called Buy-4-Less.

You may want to consider mailing a package prior to your daughter's arrival (mine is currently at session 1). I did so and I sent bedding, towels, fabric, costumes, dance shoes, toilet paper, trash can, notebooks, and even toiletries she had duplicates of. OCU even had her rather large box waiting in her room for her...talk about service! This really reduced the amount of things she had to put in her check-in baggage, as most airlines have that 50 lb. bag limit and believe me, those pounds up quickly!
My daughter just turned 16 & also had never traveled by herself. Her dad & I were not able to travel with her, but she even negotiated a plane change in Dallas by herself! Her personality tends to be a little passive, so I was pleasantly suprised at how she handled her first real "flight from the nest!"

I remember receiving a video from OCU of Les Miz without any extra payment. As TXKatsmom mentioned, we just noted the performance we wanted. Also, I recently ran across a wonderful group photo of all the kids at the session that was also sent later by OCU.

Thanks for the kind words, TXKatsmom. We just found out this week that our daughter's suitemate at OCU last summer will also be at BTP this summer. Seriously small world!

I also remember a Walgreens that was certainly within walking distance from the school. My D and I stopped in there when she went for her audition, and I remember telling her that it would be convenient to have it close by if she was accepted to the camp.

Yes, I think the Walgreen's is a few blocks east on 23rd on the other side (south) of the street. I did not mean to imply in my last post that the campus is not safe. I was just quoting my daughter as she was speaking to me. I have been to the Walmart grocery store at least twice and there is nothing scary about it! I am actually proud that my D has enough sense to know not to walk anywhere off campus at night by herself. I guess she listened to my lectures after all!

P.S. The Walmart may be closer from Cokesbury because it is on the west side of the school.

My D told me that a bunch of kids (she didn't go) walked to the Wal-Mart last night (wih camp staff).

Also, bring monologues! D says that there are Masterclasses in acting as well as voice and that if you sign up in time, you could get a chance to have faculty critique your monologues. (yay!!!)

I should emphasize that the Wal-Mart is not a super store--it is mainly the grocery half of a big Wal-Mart--but it should have trash bags and the like, but maybe not shower curtains.

Hey KatsMom! I guess Jay and Katherine (sp?) are friends. That's you, right?

Also, there is a Dollar Tree just a block west on 23rd. Everything's just a dollar and you can get alot - trash bags, shower curtain, toiletries...

Yes, they are friends...small world, huh? :)

For the final dinner/cabaret, each student's family is only allowed 4 tickets. We will have 8 people there, so if there is anyone who does not need all 4 of their tickets for the first session cabaret, I would love to purchase your extras. Please just let me know either here or with a private message. thanks!

Just wanted to let you all know that there is a video with scenes from the Sunday night cabaret.

I just went to YouTube.com and searched for OCU Summer Music and found it. I had to scroll down through several others to find it.

It is labeled as Camper's Cabaret 2008: Session One's First Cabaret.

Thanks for posting that! Wow, that first girl really blew me away.......they were all very good, though.

wow, thanks so much!!!

TXKatsmom, I watched it again, and was wondering if that was your daughter mid-video and again in the Rent song at the end? She has a beautiful voice...very well done! You must be so proud :)

What a wonderful video! Are any of the featured cabaret singers cast in "Sweeney?" I would guess that Blaine would/could be Sweeney Todd.
