newatthis, yes that’s my daughter :). Thank-you. She auditioned for Johanna and made it through all three call-backs, but in the end two blondes were cast (each role is double-cast as there are two performances). My D anticipated this as Johanna is typically blonde, blue-eyed and fair-skinned, but she tried out anyway and still did quite well and she enjoyed the call-back experience. Dr H apparently asked the two Johanna’s to dye their hair even blonder (with parent permission, of course)…that would not have worked (not even a wig, either) for my very brunette, brown-eyed, olive skinned D!
Anne1244, I’ll ask my D if any of the other Cabaret kids were cast.

Aren’t all the students who attend the summer program in the production?

oh yes, of course all of the kids are in the production. I was speaking of LEAD roles.

J’s mom: We will only reserved 3 of the 4 possible tickets. You are welcome to use our extra…how would we need to go about this?

Hooray! Thanks so much! I would guess that you would still have to do the reserving in your name. Don’t really know. I can send you the money by mail or paypal if that works for you.

4MTDTR: I tried to send a private message. Did you receive it?

JaysMom, I will have extra tickets. Do you still need some? PM me if you do.

Thanks everyone! I’ve got all 8 tickets now! See you there…

I am new to this and am so grateful to hear how things are going for your kids in Session 1. My D is going to Session II and I am busily trying to pull together all the necessities. Some of the costume requirements are going to be somewhat tricky.

Do you have any idea where kids are from that attend this training? We are in Maryland and I do hope that my D gets to meet kids from all around the country.

Just saw the clip from the second cabaret on Youtube. Do any of the kids shown in either cabaret have main parts in Sweeney Todd? Just curious.

Jay’s mom, if that is your son he is very talented as well! I know all the parents who are getting to see these clips are especially enjoying them. Three weeks is going to be a long time.

We have all the stuff for my daughter’s costume requirements except the fabric and lace. Do any of the parents from session 1 have any feedback for us session 2-ers on what they sent and if that worked out ok?

I’d also like to know how many songs most of them brought from their repertoire from home for the cabaret, classes, etc. Also, did the kids who were in duets, ensembles, etc just put these together once they got there, and had one of the kids happened to have the sheet music for these brought from home with them?

My D is sorting through her sheet music but I am not sure how much she is taking. I would imagine that they have some sheet music there as well.

Perry’sD our D is attending session II also and is flying out of BWI Sat. morning direct. Will your D be on that flight by chance? Maybe they could meet each other before boarding at the gate. Thanks

Students sign up for the Sunday cabarets when they get to OCU. The kids are not required to perform at these. They can sing any song they wish and they get one practice session with the accompanist before the performance. As for the dinner cabaret that takes place before the final show of “Sweeney Todd”, my D was just given a part by the directors. She will be singing a duet from Gyspy. They gave them the music Monday evening, and they have to use their spare time to learn the music and be ready to perform it by Friday. I’m sure they will get one practice with the accompanist prior to the show. They also have an all girl group song and and entire group song. My D also said that during some master classes kids were picked to sing one of their songs to be critiqued by the teacher. I would make sure you bring at least one song from each area (classical / up-tempo / ballad). My daughter had about 3 songs from each area, and that worked great for her.

So you’ve already seen the Youtube video. I just found it this morning and was going to post! Yes, that’s my son singing second. Thanks. About the leads… I know the boy playing Sweeney is named David. I don’t think I’ve seen him in the cabaret. Jay has mentioned first names of some others, and I’m sure some of them are on the video, but can’t remember right now. I can ask. Jay got the understudy part for Sweeney. Some of the parts, especially the girls are double cast. This is our first year, but I think that means one plays on Thursday night and the other on Friday.
I can’t really help with the girl’s costume requirements. They were completely different from the boys, of course. I can tell you that my son is not a dancer and we worried about dance wear and shoes, but that has not been necessary at all. He wears shorts and tennis shoes and says it’s no big deal. At least not in the beginner’s class! Tap was a Saturday elective, so tap shoes are good if you have them.
He took a 3 ring binder full of music. Voice is not a daily class, so he really hasn’t used most of it. They have a few master classes. Everyone doesn’t sing for all of them. The kids put together their own choices for the first two cabarets. They just sign up if they want to sing. The end of term show for the parents, I think they are told who will sing what and with whom. So, as far as music goes, bring lots so that you have a nice selection. I think he’s used one song for a master class, one for the cabaret, and hopes to sing for one more master class and will sing something for the last cabaret. The first cabaret he sang as part of a group. I think they all knew the song without music.
I have found his needs to be really minimal. He buys 24 packs of water once a week and a very few snacks at WalMart. (They take anyone who needs to go on Sunday). If you have laundry detergent, and someone brings a shower curtain and a trash can, you’re good to go. (besides your own bedding, towels, and toiletries, of course!) They are all required to be at all meals.
Hope this helps.

FRANTIKI - Yes! My daughter is taking that 9:00 flight. That’s great that they can go together - she was a bit worried about flying by herself for the first time. What is your D’s name?

JaysMom-Your son has a great voice! I remember being so impressed by some of the boys who attended last year as well.

Thank you very much. I’ll pass on the complement!

For those of you with kids in Session I, are parents receiving emails from the staff (like it appears they have in the past) giving updates on what’s happening?

I am also curious if anyone knows if any of the kids who attend the summer program go on to be MT majors at OCU…?

My D attended summer 06 and will be a OCU MT major this fall. She is also returning for session II this summer. I remember at least two girls from that summer attended OCU in 07 but neither were MT majors (BFA acting and dance). and one who will be a MT major this fall with my D.
